On This Day in Baseball History February 14, 1913: Legendary Baseball announcer Mel Allen (February 14, 1913 - June 16, 1996) was born in Greenwich, Connecticut. Allen was the first recipient Mel Allen (along with Red Barber) of the Ford C. Frick Award in 1978 for his major contributions to Baseball.
