My Gifts for the Arlathan 2022 Exchange

I received so much WEALTH this year during this @arlathanxchange! I waited for reveals so I could properly tag the creators and I'm so glad I did. Here they are in reverse-chronological order, because that's how I'm scrolling through my gifts tab:

Faerie-Stories Not for the Faint of Heart, by @hezjena is a beautiful, sumptuous examination of Flemeth of Highever tucked away in her tower, locked up by a jealous husband, who finds freedom not in the sword locked up with her like some useless treasure, but in a spirit who needs her help. Together, Flemeth and Mythal escape. The description of Flemeth's growing malaise and Mythal's threatening nature will haunt me from here on out.

Comrades in Arms, Brothers in Broken Chains, by @dreadfutures is a gorgeous piece about Felassan standing up to Geldauran during the early days of Fen'Harel's rebellion. Felassan makes a case for those who choose to keep their vallaslin, and in so doing exposes himself as the Hope of Fen'Harel. Felassan's dialogue is just perfect, and Solas at the very end tugged on my heart-strings so hard. "Are you here, my Hope?" will live on in my mind forever.

No Punches Left to Roll With, by @dreadfutures is a delicious, beautiful examination of Lace Harding falling for Charter as they fulfil Inquisition business. Harding's inner voice is perfect, Charter is stunning (pls kiss me omg Charter I love you), and their building friendship in this pre-relationship piece is just so tense and fun. I loved the insight into the inner workings of the Inquisition (and of Virelan!!! a sneak peek at my girl!) and how these two may have worked together.

oh the river, it's running free (oh the joy it brings to me), by @darethshirl is a (romantic? platonic? you decide) examination of Andraste and Shartan's relationship. I'm stunned by the beautiful inner voice Andraste has, and Shartan's comfort with her paired with his awe and admiration for her as they spend a moment together in meditation, suspended in time. This fic made me wish that nothing bad ever happened to either of them, and that their beautiful partnership, whether friendship or romance, could have continued in happiness forever.

mala suledin nadas, by @melisusthewee (you tricksy beastie) explores what happens when a certain Quinn Trevelyan, whom I love dearly, gets riddled with red lyrium projectiles and needs to be saved from Blighted dreams by the Dread Wolf. Quinn is clever and quick but not quite quick enough, Blackwall is a pure, dear delight, Sera is a griping mess of concern hidden behind blustering anger, and Solas is quiet, Solas is determined, Solas is loving and I will never, ever recover from just how tender and committed he can be, even in all his stern disapproval.

All of my presents have moved me to tears and more, and I count myself so lucky to have received them. They were an honour and pleasure to read and I can't recommend them enough.

Happy Friday! How about "Attempted Love Confession Gets Interrupted by More and More Absurd Events Each Time" for Sigrun/Velanna?

Hello! Happy Friday, and thanks very much for this prompt.

Sigrun and Velanna had been walking in the woods for some time. 

It was a late morning in spring, weeks since the hidden flowers had started to come up, and all of Amaranthine breathed rain and soil and sunlight. Mostly rain. It had been a wet year so far. Sigrun’s boots squelched on the path.

“I still don’t get why the Warden-Commander wanted us to come here,” she said, looking around at the trees and the gentle slopes. “Are we looking for something?”

“No,” said Velanna.

“Are we going somewhere, then?” Sigrun peered down the path ahead of them, then the path behind them. Her surface navigation skills weren’t the greatest—everywhere looked the same!—but she trusted Velanna not to get them totally lost. 

“Possibly,” said Velanna. She looked cagey. 

“At least it’s a nice day,” said Sigrun, just as the sky darkened and lightning flashed in the distance.

Thunder rumbled a heartbeat or two later, and it started to rain.

“Ugh,” said Velanna, as if the weather were a minor but very personal insult, and dragged Sigrun towards lower ground.

The rain continued, accented at intervals by lightning.

“This is kind of a neat ditch, as ditches go,” said Sigrun, crouching in the mud. “And I can’t knock the company.”

“Would you stop pretending to be cheerful?” snapped Velanna, who was huddled around her staff, hunching in her uniform so it covered her chin. “You’re miserable. I can tell you’re miserable.”

“Just trying to make the best of things.”

“This wasn’t supposed to… ugh. I knew something would go wrong.” When Sigrun looked over at Velanna, her ears were drooping. With her wet hair, mud-smudged cheek, and contorted posture, the overall effect was pretty pathetic.

“Hey, I meant what I said about the company,” said Sigrun. “Can you imagine being stuck out here with Anders or someone? Insufferable. And Justice, his shield would draw the lightning right down.”

“You’re not the worst option either,” said Velanna.

That pleased Sigrun more than it ought to have. She snorted, but felt herself flush a little. “Aw, thanks.”

The rain kept coming down, still too heavy to venture out in but quiet enough that they could hear themselves think. After a while, Velanna spoke again.

“Dwarf.” She sounded uncertain. “I wasn’t forthcoming before. The real reason we came out here is—”

She was interrupted when lightning struck again, far too close. A shriek of rage split the air as a wild sylvan reared into life and immediately spotted them.

Sigrun and Velanna made it out of the woods, but further trouble awaited them on the road back to Vigil’s Keep.

First there was a fallen boulder, wedged in a narrow pass, which had not been there before. After they climbed over it, they were attacked by an ogre. Velanna had to find and fling a few boulders of her own before she stunned the ogre and they could escape.

After that, the slickness of a steep-sloping path forced them to take a detour through marshy land. Velanna fell and twisted her ankle avoiding a patch of rashvine. She had her staff to lean on, and Sigrun to defend her if need be, but there wasn’t much Sigrun’s daggers could do against the clouds of insects that swarmed them.

They returned to the Vigil mud-spattered, limping, covered in insect bites, and still damp. Its familiar jumble of roofs, towers, and partially rebuilt walls was a welcome sight, until they saw that it was being attacked by more wild sylvans. A grove’s worth, by the look of it.

“Creators,” said Velanna through gritted teeth, and covered her face with the hand not clenched around her staff. “No need to belabor the point.”

The battle against the sylvans was exciting. Well, to Sigrun. Velanna limp-stomped around like she was on her last nerve and wanted to kill everything, which was also exciting, if disturbing. She kept hurling fireballs without looking.

The stormy morning had progressed into a beautiful afternoon. There were skies blue as topaz; billowing white-gray clouds that reminded Sigrun of certain deep caverns she had explored; and soft, moist air that smelled of soil and rain and sunlight and echoed with the screams of giant possessed trees.

Someone called for Sigrun in the fray. She dodged flying branches and found Nathaniel.

“Where were you?” he shouted, nocking an arrow. “We’ve been looking everywhere! The Warden-Commander’s furious.”

“What are you talking about?” Sigrun shouted back. “Velanna said we had to go out and—oh.”

“You believed her?”

“She’s bad at lying! Why would she try?”

A set of roots came up and tripped them both at once, cutting the conversation short.

Sigrun did not see Velanna again until after the battle, when they were getting dressed down by the Warden-Commander. When that was over, she went out and found Velanna on the battlements, watching people harvest wood from the felled sylvans.

It was only late afternoon, the sun hardly tipped enough to feel the shadows of evening, but Sigrun was exhausted. She looked at Velanna’s sullen, unselfconsciously handsome scowl as presented in quarter-profile, and crossed her arms.

“So, what was really out in the woods?” she asked Velanna. “Why’d you lie?”

Velanna’s shoulders stiffened. Without turning towards Sigrun, she said, “Don’t mock me.”

“I’m genuinely curious!” Sigrun protested. “Were you hunting for buried treasure? Trying to slack off?”

“I thought,” said Velanna acidly, “that it might be nice to go for a walk with you. I had something to tell you.”
