I’ve recently been on a sourdough kick and I’m just imagining Peeta teaching Katniss how to bake
P: so we have to let it rise for several hours now
K: what do you mean rise, what’s several hours got to do with it
P: well the bacteria in the sourdough will eat the flour and water we put in causing the dough to rise which is what takes time. that’s why we have to feed it
K: were feeding your sourdough?? I thought we just gave it flour and water
P: that’s feeding it
And so on and so forth. I like to think that she tries to get into baking but she thinks it’s like hunting, you have to get into it young otherwise you’ll never get a grasp on it. Also she hates the stickiness and the waiting. She loves the end product though.
Side note, If anyone has any sourdough tips I would lovveee to hear them!
Only a small bakery stood open in the town square, its doors propped wide to allow a breeze to temper the heat of the ovens. The owner, a beet-faced woman, had little interest in providing directions to nonpaying customers, so Sejanus bartered his fancy chewing gum for a loaf of bread. Relenting, she took them out on the square and pointed at the street they were to follow to the Seam.

Learned some important things in this chapter --
One, I've had to move to digital linework. It just makes edits easier.
Two, I need to give myself more time if I want higher quality. I'm happy with the art of this chapter, but it falls under 'good and acceptable'. Balancing edits, life, and the fact that I work in Pharmacy during flu season means I had less time than I'd hoped, and I just accepted I wanted to get this chapter OUT. I didn't want to make people wait longer.
So bi-weekly updates moving forward, but Patreons will see weekly pages as I finish edits and pages.
This has already turned into a great learning process and excited to continue it! I also would LOVE to hear your thoughts on Peeta's brothers~ I know there is quite the debate about their names.
Part 4: Peeta and Katniss Mellark and their children on the bakery’s porch
Oh my! That’s my first finished series! That was short but I still feel pretty proud 😂. I will upload full series altogether in one post tomorrow.
Also here’s my super strong head canon about mature Peeta: he wears his hair a bit longer than before (just because I looooove it this way, haha).
Hope you enjoy this short story from bakery’s porch. It was important for me because I love Mellarks and feel really sad about this family and lack of appreciation for them even in many post mockingjay fics. Like you know, Peeta thinks only about Katniss and bla bla. Gosh, he lost all his family. That’s tragic and hurt so much. I hope my silly illustrations will warm your heart. It’s about love and memories.
“Prim, let go,” I say harshly, because this is upsetting me and I don’t want to cry. When they televise the replay of the reaping tonight, everyone will make note of my tears, and I’ll be marked as an easy target. A weakling. I will give no one that satisfaction.
It saddens me to think that this (putting on a brave, indifferent face) is nothing new to Katniss. She’s already spent years acting tough and keeping people at arm’s length in order to protect Prim.
“Look at her. Look at this one!” he hollers, throwing an arm around my shoulders. He’s surprisingly strong for such a wreck. “I like her!”
I’ve always loved Haymitch’s first appearance. Years ago, --back when we were doing the wonderful group listen over at @treasonous-transmissions-- someone mentioned that Haymitch might not have been as drunk as he seemed. The comment sparked a long debate and many interesting points were raised.
I do think Haymitch was drunk that day, but I also think that he was sober enough to understand the enormity of what was happening and that he was trying to create a diversion, because he probably feared what the Capitol might do to D12 if this little rebellion (this moment of silence followed by the three-finger salute) went any further.
At one point, Katniss wonders, “Is he addressing the audience or is he so drunk he might actually be taunting the Capitol?” I understand that, from her perspective, these are the only two choices. But I don’t think he was doing either.
I honestly believe Haymitch’s words were directed to someone else altogether. Someone like his fellow victors or Plutarch or any others who might have been connected to the early stirrings of a rebellion which was already brewing.
“For a moment, I yearn for something... the idea of leaving the district... making our way into the woods... but I know I was right about not running off. Because who else would have volunteered for Prim?”
Yes. this is a terrible moment of sadness and truth. Katniss would have never left Prim behind, not when her future was so uncertain. She’ll only leave her later --when she goes to the Capitol to kill Snow-- because she thinks Prim will be safe in D13; because she feels there’s nothing more she can do for her. How heartbreaking it is to know she was wrong.
“It didn’t occur to me until the next morning that the boy might have burned the bread on purpose. Might have dropped the loaves into the flames, knowing it meant being punished, and then delivered them to me. But I dismissed this. It must have been an accident. Why would he have done it? He didn’t even know me. Still, just throwing me the bread was an enormous kindness that would have surely resulted in a beating if discovered.”
As much as I like the movies --especially the first one (I know, unpopular opinion)-- I’ve always hated that Peeta apologises to Katniss for not handing her the bread and throwing it at her instead. That line makes me furious and I think that the passage above explains why.
Peeta is not being arrogant or bratty. He throws the bread at Katniss’s feet because he’s doing something he’s not supposed to do --something he’s not allowed to do-- and he needs to be discreet and quick. If he had walked over to the tree to hand her the bread, one of two things would have probably happened.
1. Katniss might not have accepted it (she’s starving, but Seam pride runs deep and she’s never seen such generosity before)
2. He might have gotten caught by either a Peacekeeper or his own mother. Either scenario lands them both in a heap of trouble and benefits no one. So no, I don’t believe Peeta has anything to apologise for.
“Maybe if I had thanked him at some point, I’d be less conflicted now. I thought about it a couple of times, but the opportunity never seemed to present itself. And now it never will. [...] Exactly how am I supposed to work in a thank-you in there? Somehow it just won’t seem sincere if I’m trying to slit his throat.”
I think I must be a bit dark and twisted, because this paragraph always makes me laugh. I mean, the situation couldn’t be more horrible and still... It’s like Katniss says in chapter one. “We have to joke about it because the alternative is to be scared out of our wits.” I guess we can all relate to that in some way.
