Abbazia di Melrose, Scottish Borders. David I ha fondato il primo monastero cistercense della Scozia nel 1136. Essendo così vicina al confine, l'Abbazia di Melrose ha sofferto per mano degli inglesi durante il Medioevo. La posizione di Melrose lo mise in prima linea nel conflitto con l'Inghilterra durante il tardo Medioevo. Melrose fu attaccata da Edoardo I (1300 e 1307) e Edoardo II (1322) richiese importanti riparazioni. Anche l'attacco di Riccardo II a Melrose nel 1385 portò a una completa ricostruzione della chiesa abbaziale. L'Abbazia subì la Riforma protestante nel 1560.
