Mel has to practice her elegance.

It's not something that comes naturally, not at first. She's too nervous in her own skin, too conscious and aware of others, and so she practices to be poised. How to hold herself with more confidence than she feels, how to incline her head just so, how to set her limbs, and to move with effortless grace.

She's like a fawn at the start, on wobbly legs. As she grows older, it becomes easier. She learns harder lessons, lessons in being shrewd. In measuring the trustworthiness of those who flutter in and out of her sphere. In allowing them to underestimate her and using that. In always getting what she wants. in bloodshed and death.

Still, Azizi teaches her kindness and compassion, mercy but not without cunning and statecraft. Mel learns at first, to balance these less popular lessons with their family creed. She finds she is not made for war. She is not made for the eerie silence of death, and though her mother deals in excess, Mel vows not to. She will not waste life in conquest. She will nurture lives, help them grow. Help them to realize their own beauty.

She will make them golden.
