As to the question about synthesis, the main reason I can think of is that it would mess up all medical knowledge garnered thus far, given that all living things are now partly synthetic -- meaning that an awful lot of anti-biotic medication and other such medicines will no longer work due to a change in the bodies make-up -- and it could lead to a simple cold (or computer virus) wiping out the entirety of life. (I chose destroy, seeing it as the only true way of removing the Reaper threat)

This... is farther reaching than I had considered. It raises some good points.
