We continue with the analysis of the memories in Japanese and English, now with memory 3. I have a lot of things to say, so let's begin!
Memory 3:
English:
Blumiere: “Timpani, why? Why do you avoid me?”
Timpani: “Ow... OW! Unhand me!”
Blumiere: “Huh? You're crying! Why? Timpani, you must tell me what has happened!”
Timpani: “It's nothing... Don't worry about it... Just forget it…”
Blumiere: “Oh no... Timpani, is my father behind this?”
Timpani: “I'm... I'm just an ordinary girl. No matter how much I love you, we must part.”
Blumiere: “Timpani... I…”
Timpani: “This is good-bye, Blumiere. There's no other choice. This is our fate…”
Japanese:
Blumiere: “Why…? Why are you avoiding me!?”
Timpani: “O-Ow… Let me go!”
Blumiere: “!? T-This wound… How did this happen, Timpani!?”
Timpani: “…Nothing… Nothing happened…”
Blumiere: “Don’t tell me… Did my father do this to you…?”
Timpani: “I’m just a regular girl… No matter how much we love each other, we cannot be together…”
Blumiere: “Timpani…”
Timpani: “This is goodbye, Blumiere. This is… This is our fate…”
At first, they seem very similar, but you'll see. Something I've noticed, not only in this one but in the other memories as well, is that Blumiere in English has a more relaxed and melancholic attitude, compared, of course, to the Japanese version. I've noticed that the latter is more energetic and volatile, and feels emotions on the surface. His character shows that he was raised and educated by the Tribe of Darkness.
First, with this memory in Japanese, Blumiere seems to be demanding an explanation from Tim, but he also seems to doubt the answer he might receive. And in English, Blu seems more disappointed than anything else. Then, in the Japanese version, Tim seems unaware of how much his grip hurts, reacting badly. But in English, when she feels his grip, her pain is much more gradual, and she realizes that she doesn't want him to touch her. And even in the Japanese version, it seems that Blumiere's grip is stronger and more painful, or so Tim perceives ‘cause of her wound.
In Japanese, when Blu realizes her injury, he ANGRILY demands to know what happened. In English, Blu seems more perceptive and seems to believe that HE did something wrong. But in Japanese, when he notices the wound, we see that it's more physical, while in English it seems to be a deep emotional wound, showing that Timpani doesn't want Blumiere around because the situation was out of his control; here, he seems concerned and seems to want to help her in a certain way.
And Tim's response in Japanese seems more like an abuse, denying what happened and even hesitating to tell him. In English, however, Timpani downplays it, even showing that she doesn't want Blu to suffer any harm from his father, even telling him to forget the incident. In Japanese, Blumiere's sadness is much more evident, as he composes his feelings and puts the pieces together as he calms down, feeling immensely guilty. And in English, Blu seems to fear the response, feeling powerless because he knows full well what his father is capable of. Personally, I think the Japanese version is more well done.
Then, Timpani's response in Japanese shows how she minimizes herself. After a little research, according to the dictionary, the difference between "regular" and "ordinary" is that a regular person follows regulations or norms. So, Timpani in Japanese is implying that she is willing to follow the rule of never seeing each other again. On the other hand, "ordinary" means something common, normal, vulgar, and even of low esteem. So, here, it seems that in the English version, Blumiere's father degraded Timpani until she felt like nothing.
Furthermore, in Japanese, Tim validates Blu's feelings and reaffirms them, saying that, no matter how much their love is reciprocated, they can't be together. In contrast, Timpani in English seems to show that what happened wasn't Blumiere's fault, and that she takes full responsibility, and even here it seems more like a breakup.
Then, in Japanese, Blumiere seems to want to make her reconsider her decision, or even beg her not to. And in English, Blu seems to want to convince her otherwise, that it's her fault they can't be together.
Timpani's words are more forceful: she wants to cut ties for him, declaring that they weren't meant to be together. In English, the scene is even more dramatic, stating that there is no other option. That this was always their destiny.
In conclusion, both versions show how much they love each other, and Timpani believes she's doing the right thing for Blumiere's well-being. Against all odds, I chose the English version.
