Day 5 Intro Womanism 101 . First of all, Sojourner Truth likely never said these words but when black womens stories are retold by white ppl they have always historically added a little neck roll to it and folk eat it up because you believe in a sassy little attitudinal slave woman with her hand on her hip and her lips pursed in front of a room full of white folk talking about, “And girrrrrlllll, Ain’t I’s a woman?” 😒 But the jist of what we can confirm and believe Sister Truth was saying is, “There was no black women’s slave work and black men’s slave work. We were doing the same work. PLUS I was birthing babies and dealing with Massa’s (redacted) so 😬 how is there a separation of us today I’m getting our rights?” And to the great care all ppl seemed to have for white women she was saying, “Ain’t nobody ever treated me gently or helped me over no puddle like white women. But I am a woman too. Ain’t I?” Current medical practices, policies and support around reproductive issues, incarceration rates, and the ways Little bloc girls are treated in school would prove that this treatment and trope lives on. . Your Day 5 Consideration is to read @rachel.Cargle’s (Unpacking White Feminism) Social Syllabus (Link on the website in her bio). Rachel has done an incredible job of curating a conversation around the racist roots of white feminism and the ways white feminism still lives into those racist, #MeFirst (Often #MeOnly) ideologies and behaviors. .
