Mers have learned how to blend in with humans to avoid being hunted for their scales. The caveat is that while they appear human, they still need periodic soaks in water. Unfortunately, getting water on their skin breaks the spell that gives them legs and reverts them to tails. To help with this, most mer within a community will band together to protect each other during soaking periods.

Muse A is an ocean mer that has just moved inland for a job opportunity. Muse B is a river mer that has lived in the town for years. Muse A and Muse B are waiting for the bus when a broken fire hydrant suddenly informs Muse A that fresh water has the same effect on them as salt water.

So theres a human. And they've been in a sort of 'on again off again' relationship with this huge Mermaid/man. One day they visit and see the Mer chewing on a wooden necklace the human had made for them years ago. This ticks them off and they huff off to the beach where they vent thier feelings to a close friend (could be another mer or a human who knows alot). 'Its just like a dumb chew toy to them! I thought mermaids cared alot about gifts and jewelry' and the friend, who probably hangs out more with the Mer, is like 'Bro they freaking love that thing. It's like a stress ball or something. They chew on it to calm them down and won't let anyone touch it, seriously they scratched me once when I tried to look at it' and the person is like 'oh...'

Mer A is a solitary mer that lives in a bay and spends most of their time hiding in caves during the day and hunting at night.

Mer B is an oceanic mer that comes to the bay every spring with their pod to mate and reproduce.

Mer A is immediately smitten with Mer B but unsure if Mer B would be attracted to a mer not of their species.

The bottom feeders get protection and the predators get food.

Because of this its not uncommon for bottom feeders to chose a favorite and linger with them for decades on end.

A mer that lives in a small garden pond of a human's yard.

They drag themselves across the ground to help with tending to the garden. And they even patrol the yard during the warmer months for any stray birds that might've fallen from the nest.

If they're orphaned or the humans are unable to to return them to the nest the mer will take care of them, keeping any eye on the human's children as well when they come out to play.

In exchange for food and an item of a particular human's enemy they'll kill the one that wears that scent. Serving as a mercernary of sorts.

A leviathan mer that has occupied a portion of the ocean and islands that inhabit the water. They've lived in that area for so long the people there worship them as a god and use the scales of the mer that have fallen or have been scraped off to construct their housing and weapons.

The people also help to groom the mer and in return the large mer protects the weird creatures it only knows as family from colonizers and pirates.
