No, you’re not reading that incorrectly - this really is an ad for the 1986 #MercurySable in Japan. In 1989, #Ford began airing TV spots in the U.S. touting Taurus sales in Japan, though the Taurus was exported there in relatively modest numbers. By then Japan’s Fords were sold through a partnership with Mazda called #Autorama - set up in 1982 but not greatly expanded until 1988 when both companies took a more active role in Ford’s distribution in Japan. Autorama didn’t widely sell the Sable, but this ad is from 1986. - The original Taurus/Sable didn’t have quite the seismic impact in Japan that it had in the U.S., but the Sable, with it’s jellybean shape, smooth sides, and big light bar up front, still would have looked futuristic at the time, pitched against cars on the larger end of the spectrum in the #JDM which tended to be more conservative and square in 1986-87. In the 1987-88 era, Ford sold around 50,000 cars a year in Japan but they were a wide mixture of Mazda-sourced Asia-Pacific Fords, U.S., and Euro-market cars. - Over here, of course, the Taurus/Sable really were an earthquake in 1985 - replacing the aging Fairmont-based LTD and building on the “Aero” themes designer Jack Telnack’s teams created for the 1983 T-bird/Cougar and 1984 Tempo/Topaz. These cars did well for Ford, but the company had taken many losses in the early 1980s and really bet the farm on the Taurus/Sable - their budget was $3.5 Billion - an unheard of sum at that time and reflective of the clean-sheet approach to designing (and building) these new cars. They didn’t just look radical, they were also assembled in a more calculated and precise way. - These cars sold very well and as a result their shape became very familiar - it’s easy to forget how radically different they were in 1986, when the square-rigged Fairmont and LTD were what everybody thought of as a “Ford sedan.” Their engines, the 2.5L HSC four and the Vulcan V6, weren’t as radical as the outside, but their modern suspensions and running gear carried them well. The #Sable was arguably the sleeker of the pair, with it’s unadorned sides, blacked out greenhouse, and the light bar that briefly became a Mercury trademark. https://www.instagram.com/oldmotors/p/ButsSKzgLgF/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1ir9mx6u6o1ip
On Saturday we finally said goodbye to our old #car. She was #donated to @wesparksupport #cancercharity, an organization providing amazing services that @marylousandler & I use every week. I was excited to find a company that allows you to make a #cardonation to the #charity of your choice. So of course I chose #weSPARK. This 1996 #mercurysable was a gift from grandma when she could no longer #drive. It served us well, but we got a new car last year & while going thru #cancer this past year, I couldn’t use it anyway. So it is off to a better #cause now. #embracecancer #lovecancer #freecancer . . . #donation #vehicledonation #towtruck #ford #mercury #charitablecause. #love #life
Hit 200,000 km on my car tonight. #MercurySable #200k #milestone
