What do you think of the commentary for Merlin episodes, specifically Bradley’s commentary?

I’ve listened to all of them, and what most fans say are true, he makes some unnecessary remarks on Angel’s voice and appearance.

It makes me uncomfortable as a fan to support the show; sorry if this isn’t one of your usual asks

It is valid to feel uncomfortable with the commentary of Merlin, especially with some things Bradley James says regarding his female colleagues (including Angel Coulby/Gwen).

It can be difficult to watch/listen to the commentary whilst derogatory comments are made and to hear that a Black woman & character are being put down by those who should uplift her.

I can also imagine Angel Coulby herself might have felt uncomfortable, (coming from the fact many ethnic minorities tend to feel uneasy when most of their colleagues are white).

It is completely okay to decide not to support the show due to these comments as I understand how comments such as these made by cast members can alter the way you feel about a show/film.

At the same time, it is also okay to continue supporting the show as long as you having that understanding, awareness and recognition of what was said, and why it was not okay.

It can be quite upsetting and deflating to want to engage more in something you love (e.g being in the fandom or watching extras such as the commentary), so if anyone would like to watch the commentary, please be aware harmful in it beforehand.

If even just once, merlin would just tell someone "I don't trust you because there's a prophecy and in the prophecy you kill Arthur" then fucking Everything would have been better!

Specifically I am talking about my baby boy mordred who is so wholesome, so loving, and too good for this world. But merlin fucks that up and I'm sorry but I can't forgive him for it

In s5e11 mordred is trying to save Kara. And he expresses complete belief and loyalty to Arthur. But merlin doesn't trust him, and so he doesn't talk to him or hear him out and so everything gets fucked

If merlin had just listened for one fucking minute, he probably would have Helped mordred, and healed the girl and told mordred about the prophecy! For fucks sake

I love Merlin's complete and utter devotion to Arthur, but sometimes it gets to an unhealthy degree that becomes straight up unlivable

In moments like this, his desperation to protect Arthur leads him to bad decisions that he won't even involve Arthur in! He won't even say anything! Ever!

Merlin is so traumatized by this presumed future that he refuses to act in action of the present. He sees everything as a lead up to he end that he saw in the crystals and has heard from the magic creatures he's met. He never stops to consider what's actually happening in this moment and that's what leads to the downfall of everything he loves.

(also the usual caveat to this being that this show was never going to end happily, fate and destiny are inevitable and no matter what anyone did they would have met the same end, but fandoms offer a space of agreed assumption that character actions could have changed things blah blah blah)

BBC Merlin 3x04 Gwaine

This is my favourite episode of the show, and Gwaine is my favourite character, so I decided I have to at least finish the commentary for all episodes up to this one before throwing my towel, so, here you go!

I actually find it hard to believe that she is so okay with everything. Not that I think she shouldn’t be thankful, of course, but like, while Arthur picking a fight did help her get rid of the thugs, the property damage they have done probably lost her much more than what she would’ve paid the thugs? I mean, they completely trashed the entire place. That thug must have been a huuuuuge pain in the ass.

Almost got stabbed to death, woke up with hair like this? What is your secret?

This is an actual snapchat I sent my sister the first time I saw this scene. I have no excuse.

Dude, there are only, like, a dozen pairs of boots here. Which is not that much of a surprise, now that I think about it, since the Camelot knights get wiped out in every battle and excursion. It’s probably a miracle that they still have this many.

With soles like that, the army can just… slip to death. I mean look. There are literally no grooves. None. And look at those stone/marble floors in the castle.

This is a really cool line and we all know it, but I just love it more because while Gwaine is talking about the knights, he is also talking to Uther. I don’t know if Gwaine means it that way—we know he has no love for nobles including the king and the crown prince, but not whether he thinks Uther is a good king or not in specific—but the fact that he said that to Uther, who is the king but acts despicably all the time throughout the series, makes this line even more meaningful. (Of course, it completely flies over Uther’s head, but anyways. Still nice to hear someone say that to his face.)

As I’ve said before, the further you go in Merlin, the more depressing it gets, and I find it very difficult for me to do commentary on it. Sorry! But I am planning to do commentary on other films/shows--I have a lot a lot of stuff in my to-watch list!

fortunately (in this case at least) i'm a very paranoid person..and feared as much..so i did download it all and added to one of my online storages.. :D

BBC Merlin 5x04: How Morgana caught Merlin

This came to me in a blinding flash of clarity. I used to think that Morgana had merely suspected Merlin before following him to the river. 

But no, Morgana actually guessed what Mithian had planned. Prior to the scene above, Mithian had told Morgana that she was going to wash. But in the above scene, she saw Mithian offering Merlin her waterskin for refilling. 

Why would she need Merlin to refill her waterskin when she had just been at the river? 

So that was why Morgana decided to follow Merlin.

So I have taken to rewatching Merlin in its entirety with two of my mates (one who has seen it before (H) , one who has not (E) ). And I thought I'd share our thoughts on each episode as we go through.

S1 ep1-5 have already been watched, but the main themes from that were 'look how gay they are' and Lancelot being nicknamed 'the beautiful man with the beautiful face' by H. And none of us could work out why the people didn't just leg it out of the throne room when they realised they were falling asleep in s1ep1.

So. Onto s1ep6 thoughts:

H: Do you think they feed the dragon?

Me: I don't think Uther's that nice.

H: Do you think he magics up his own food? Can he do that?

E: Would the magic food actually have any nutritional value?

Me: Surely he can just survive without.

H: The rocks! Can he eat the rocks?

Me, shouting at the telly: Well that wasn't very helpful was it? Just give a straight answer, man!

H: Look at that face! He's evil.

Me: He is very sketchy.

H: It's something about the eyes.

Me: Agreed.

H: Although if he is just vengeful, then isn't Uther...

Me: Uther's the real evil round here.

Me: Gaius knows what's up.

H: He doesn't trust him, good man.

Me, screaming at the telly: NO MERLIN YOU IDIOT!

H: Does that spell mean 'kill Merlin?'

(Edwin dies, we all go 'ooh')

Me: Yep, I think so.

H: The evil man is dead!

(Afterwards)

Me: So, opinions? Thoughts?

E: I have nothing to say.
