It used to be way more dramatic but I decided that Merliah had ENOUGH drama in her life with her family and she didn't need that, so now it's just like... They hang out for awhile and then they just get closer. I feel like they didn't really consider it when they were rivals pre-movie (obvs) but post-movie when they've been thru so much together... And then they model together for awhile and Kylie goes to study abroad in the US and it's totally not JUST bc Merliah is there or anything... It just happens pretty naturally. Plus, Kylie is one of the few humans Merliah can be her authentic self with, mermaid half and all, so that helps, too--especially in the fallout of MT2 when Merliah really needs support. Kylie moves to the US permanently after they're done with high school (Merliah would have considered moving, but she really can't be away from Oceana for too long), they get married in 2017 (I think?) and then they have their sons in 2020. Sorry it's not a very exciting answer but they're one of my more low-key couples lol.

If Mermaid Tale did have a Ken type character, do you think he would’ve been a human or a mermaid and what would his relationship to merliah be? Like would they be established friends/ dating already or would they meet in the mermaid world and develop some sorta friendship/relationship that way... and how do you think him being a character affect the plot?

I actually used to have an oc for this! He was based on the doll from the first movie (and second), so he was human. His name was Nathan Lawson, and he was Merliah’s boyfriend, but they broke up after the second movie when she realized that she was a lesbian (after meeting Kylie). They stayed friends afterward, though.

I abandoned him after I decided that merlylie didn’t need that kind of drama, Merliah had enough going on in her life. Nowadays, I still use the design, since there’s a backgrounder in the first movie that matches it, but I use it for Merliah’s cousin Shred Summers, instead. (Which is a weird retool, I know, from boyfriend to cousin, but it’s a perfectly good design so I don’t want to waste it.)

I have no idea what they would have done with him in canon, but he probably would have just hung out with Fallon and Hadley on land while Merliah was having her adventure.

I forgot, why did she have to give up her title at the end of MT2? Did she disqualify because she was at the changing of the tides or something?

No, she started spinning merillia while she was surfing, and then she was having so much fun with that that she just sat down on her board, saying it was better than winning. Kylie asked if she was sure, and she said yes, so Kylie said that she was gonna go for it, and Merliah cheered her on. It was really sweet.
