Jemily thoughts pt. 9
Their first picnic. Everything foreseeably possible goes wrong.
@jemily--prentiss here you go, it’s a long one :)
JJ had told Emily that it was going to rain. She had checked the weather. JJ had told her. That’s why she wasn’t going to be held responsible for this mess. The women had started out the lay lounging around in bed. It was a rare day off and the air felt lighter, knowing that they didn’t have to leave the comforting solace of their own home. That was when Emily had been struck with “brilliance”. She suggested that they venture into a hiking trail that she had only see in passing to have a picnic. Both women loved the outdoors and the everything seemed to be okay. JJ was hesitant, solely because nothing seemed better than the warmth she had with Emily wrapped around her under their soft sheets. It didn’t take too much coaxing but eventually she was on board. They decided to leave in the evening, giving Emily the entire day to prepare. She went about scurrying around the house to find what they needed. After all, she was the one who suggested so naturally she wanted to make it perfect for JJ. Emily cut up the remaining bag of fresh fruits in their fridge. It was enough to fill two medium sized Tupperware bowls. She arranged other snacks and finger foods as well to take. Satisfied with that part of her prep, Emily moved to sneak in something else. She quickly prepared the fixings to a pasta while JJ napped upstairs. The recipe was one that she had cherished for several years and didn’t make often. The hour before they left, she gathered all the blankets, poured herself into a little polo and jeans combo that was tacky yet cute, and let JJ get ready. JJ did the one thing that Emily had forgotten to and checked the weather. 60% chance of showers. The sky outside looked clear so Emily wouldn’t have it. Despite JJ’s comments, she pushed forward with the plan. Then things began to happen. The women were in the car, blasting their love playlist when the closed sign came into view. A large chained post was before them as they pulled up the trail entrance. Apparently some kids had been playing and stupidly fell down the hill, closing it down for the next month. Stupid kids. Keeping up hope, Emily pulled JJ over to the next available trail that was just a mile down the road. Walking quickly, the women managed to eventually find the trail opening. They had to walk for at least another 20 minutes before they found an area that was worth sitting in. The sky had started to dim, leaving JJ weary, but Emily remained optimistic. She set out the blankets and sat down with her girlfriend. Within a few minutes, their stomachs growled. Emily reached in to her handy wicker basket and pulled out her preprepared snacks. They munched on those for a little bit and talked about anything and everything. When the food supply began to run low, Emily got excited. She wiggled her eyebrows and reached into her basket once more. Hoping to pull out pasta, she frowned when her hand only felt wicker. Looking into the basket, Emily almost gasped. She had forgotten the pasta. She chuckled nervously and turned to JJ. Before JJ could ask what happened, a big, fat droplet of rain landed squarely on her forehead. They looked up and saw the sky shift. Minutes later, the rain rattled down on them, drenching JJ, Emily, and all of their supplies. JJ mocked Emily with an “I told you so” but noticed that the brunette still kept her dazzling smile. They managed to get back to their car and put everything away. But before JJ could climb in, Emily spun her around. Her arms wrapped tightly around the blonde and she hugged her. Emily hugged and rocked JJ with everything she could. JJ soon followed suit. It wasn’t that their entire picnic had been ruined. It was that, no matter how the picnic turned out, she was beyond glad that she could do it with JJ. They swayed, twirled, and jiggyed in the rain for countless minutes. Throwing caution to the wind, against their normal carefulness, felt freeing. Their hearts glowed in the company of each other. This was their forever.
