GOSH your little butterfly AU has got me hyped, I can't wait to see Howdy becoming a pretty butterfly. Poor Barnaby though.

The thing is, all of the puppets live in this very carefree, child-friendly world devoid of real stakes or conflict. It’s a kids show, after all - no one dies or gets sick beyond a cold, maybe there are arguments, or it’s a rainy day, but everything eventually returns to a brightly colored status quo. So I’d imagine that when something ACTUALLY terrible occurs, like a neighbor suddenly being absent, the neighbors might not be emotionally equipped to handle it.

That’s why all of them still treat Howdy as if he’s there, and go out of their way to interact with him- he’s not gone, he’s right here, and we can’t just ignore our friend! Maybe they all feel that if they treat him like they always have, things will be back to normal in no time. Barnaby feels upset in a way that he can’t really verbalize because, unconsciously, he’s kind of grieving.

favorite concept I came up with is that in the metamorphic au, rocky is mostly just a human shaped Eridian tbh, he looks human, but his inside anatomy is still all metal and shit (yeah mercury blood), even though he looks much scrawnier (and 5”9, shorter than grace, but only by a little lol) he could probably pick grace up and fling him across a room like it’s nothing lol

I’ll have you know while I was writing the metamorphic au (my human!rocky phm au) I spent a lot of time just laying down and trying to imagine how foreign a human body would be to someone who wasn’t born into one, REALLY focusing on the specific things humans take for granted when it comes to our basic functioning. when you think about it, the constant flow of your bloodstream in your ears, your heartbeat, your mouth constantly being wet, the way your skin interacts with your surroundings, how air feels in your lungs, how it feels to see, it’s kinda terrifying.

Who wants to hear my half baked barely scientific explanation for my metamorphic au???

was a little annoyed when I remembered splicing doesn’t work on mature organisms, and mutation to the caliber of for instance… “give that tiger wings” doesn’t exist (yet) and we will (probably) NEVER figure that out.

BUT.

this is what sci fi is for.

In this universe eridians have the ability to, when their dna is threatened, copy the genetic code of another’s dna to sustain their cells. Usually they copy the dna of other eridians, which is one of the reasons you might see eridians with differing rock formations on their carapace that don’t match others (kinda like how some crystals grow together) is because they borrowed genetic code from another Eridian.

on the planet Adrian there exists a pretty straightforward dna damaging infection (that can pretty easily be fought off by the white blood cells in grace, rocky isn’t so lucky.) that rocky contracts during his incredibly brief time in the planet’s environment.

on their way back to erid grace notices rocky hasn’t been doing well, and it’s because the infection is constantly destroying his cells, and his body is constantly trying to build them back up, but unfortunately doesn’t have any other eridian dna codes to work off of.

however, his body does find grace’s cells to work off of, and continues to rely on this genetic recipe more and more as the infection ravages rocky’s dna, basically his body is doing it’s own complex gene editing, replacing Rocky’s dna with some of grace’s.
