Metatopia 2025
Just came back from a four hour drive and I figured it was a good opportunity to share my experiences.
2025 has been a RIGHT BITCH. I needed community and I got it.
For those unfamiliar, Metatopia is one of my favorite conventions. I get in cheap, play lots of games, do what I can to break them help their creators, and every step of the way people thank me for showing up and playing along with whatever they came here for. (frequently they don't know what they're asking for).
Afterwards there's Lobby Con, which is very often more of the same except I don't have to think so hard about holding back.
This Metatopia, my favorite playtest ended up being a LARP, which is rare for me. I usually struggle to engage with LARPs more than other games so whenever I pull one I simply note that I'm not usually a LARP player and give feedback suited to my normal level of familiarity.
The Fortunate Ones is a game about neurodivergence, accessibility, transhumanism, and empathy. It was itself also quite accessible! (the version that I playtested was itself an adaptation of a LARP designed to be played virtually, which I kind of want to follow up on now)
Not unsurprisingly, the roughest parts had to do with the design of the in-person components.
I look forward to seeing how it develops.
