The @metoomvmt HBCU Tour was an amazing and eye opening experience. I’m honored to have been a part of the visual documentation of it. Look for it coming to more schools in the Fall! #RepostPlus @metoomvmt - - - - - - What a joyride this has been! Five stops, seven schools, and enough love to power 12 generations. Our 1st ever #metooHBCU Tour was a beautiful coming together in the fight to end sexual violence on campus and in our larger communities. We are deeply inspired by the students who have been organizing, and those who felt motivated to join the task force or take action in their own ways after attending a strategic convening, men’s workshop, or fireside chat. Major thanks to @vanlathan for being our esteemed guest on our last stop at FAMU, and for bringing vulnerability and levity to the conversation. @wade_davis28, you already know how we feel- we deeply appreciate you and the energy you brought to the AUC, NCCU and FAMU. Finally, we need to thank the #metooHBCU Tour team- @fiyawata, @maorikarmael, @patriceworthy, @rashidzakat, and @embassy730 for the seamless planning and documentation of all stops. #WeAllWeGot Despite the lessons and challenges we encountered, we would do it all again- and we plan to! Friday was an incredible lesson in the power of commitment and community responsibility. We began the day with the fireside chat, where ASU President Ross (@asupres15) agreed to match the $10k ‘me too.’ grant that will go towards increasing resources for sexual assault prevention and survivor support on campus. We wrapped the day by talking about tactical and systemic solutions that require action from both students and administration. We’d like to send BIG LOVE and gratitude to President Ross, Denise Davis-Maye (@hoodlectual101), Davida Haywood and Kenneth Mullinax for helping to make our ASU stop a wonderful success. THANK YOU to the @asuhornets who donned their gold jackets and hung out with us on a Friday night to dream up some real possibilities for their class, and the ones to come. Photos from yesterday’s stop at the Atlanta University Center #RepostPlus @metoomvmt - - - - - - Students from @cau1988, @spelman_college, and @morehouse1867 SHOWED UP and SHOWED OUT yesterday! We had a full day of release, exchange, and discovery that further solidified the reasons why and how we do the work we do. Thank you to the student organizers and leaders who came ready for action. We look forward to coming back to build on what we started. We’d also like to thank Wade Davis (@wade_davis28) and Aisha Hinds (@appleofhisai) for coming through and dropping so many gems. Wade shared that when we suspend the need to be ‘good people,’ we can find common ground and get to the heart of how we enact and respond to harmful behavior. Aisha talked about the first step in the movement to end sexual violence is coming to the realization that real harm has been done and healing needs to happen. We love you! Yesterday was a powerful experience and seeing the work @metoomvmt is doing to ensure a safe college environment for women and men is inspiring. Next stop Atlanta. #RepostPlus @metoomvmt - - - - - - “We are clear about how our communities think about sexual violence and what the backlash has been. Part of the reason why we’re here is to reimagine. Because on a college campus, you have the ability to try things and recreate. If campuses are a microcosm of our larger communities, what can happen in a community in which the people who live there develop the resources and supports within it? What would it feel like to walk around a campus that is free of violence?” - @taranajaneen The first stop on our #metooHBCU Tour at @howard1867 yesterday was incredible! We are so thankful for the students, faculty and administrators who showed up with open hearts and deep commitment to the work of ending sexual assault on HBCU campuses. @mooredarnell talked about love with accountability and the courage it takes to be self-reflexive and to call out behavior that contributes to rape culture. @fiyawata told the truth about consent and boundaries, and how these lessons around bodily autonomy, when taught early, can have deep impact on how we move in the world and engage with each other. We are full of gratitude to every brilliant and passionate student who took the time to reimagine with us, as well as those who joined the task force to further these efforts.
