Zoom out. Get perspective. I had a revelation this week. If you give me a thousand praises, I’ll find the one tiny negative thing I think you said and zero in on that negativity. For example, a friend told me, “Fabulous, Greig. But why are you texting 💬 me 5:00 a.m.?” I focused on the negative aspect of that message. But really. They were happy to hear from me. And they were setting boundaries. So, I’ve been mapping out my mental states and employing metacognition. When I feel like something someone said or did was negative, I zoom out and look at the bigger picture. Often the overall reality is way more favorable than a mere negative remark or action.
