Monsters of Rock Tour at the Metrodome, Minneapolis (1988)

Super Bowl XXVI, Minneapolis, January 17-26, 1992
Activities for Super Bowl LII are in full swing. 26 years ago Minneapolis saw similar excitement, as home to Super Bowl XXVI. The game, played at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome on January 26, 1992, was between the Washington Redskins and the Buffalo Bills.
These brochures and booklets from the 1992 game week (found in the Minneapolis History Collection vertical files) reflect the pride of Minnesotans in this cold-weather city--”the great Minnesota warm up”, “the hottest week of the year”, “let us ‘wintertain’ you.” Top photo of the Metrodome during Super Bowl XXVI from the Jeffrey P. Grosscup Collection.
Do you have memories of the 1992 game or “wintertainment”? How does it compare to 2018? If you’re downtown for Super Bowl LIVE, stop by Minneapolis Central Library for a break from the cold.
Blading.
December 3, 1990 Scott Olson was one of many roller skaters who glided through the concourse at the Metrodome. Most of the skaters that spent time rolling around the metro area lakes this summer, now find the smooth, dry concrete floors, heat, and light of the Metrodome concourse preferable to the Minnesota winter outside. Straight Into Darkness [Live at the Metrodome] - Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers (1986)
Complete with introduction by Bob Dylan. This show was notorious for being one of the worst-sounding performances ever to take place in Minneapolis. It was the first large-scale rock show at the Metrodome and apparently the acoustics were nearly unbearable.
You’d never know it, listening to this pristine board mix. Most of the people at the show probably had no idea how great the performance actually was!
Hear the rest of the show (Dylan sets and all) here.
