Years ago, I worked on a children’s book about my family, I didn’t finish it since my papel Picado became primarily my medium. But this is how I remember my dad. Going to the beach was always so exciting, it was usually on Sundays after mass, we would pack up the station wagon and all 11 of us would drive to the beach. We usually stopped to buy a sandia, watermelon by a vendor on the side of the road. My dad was a big tall man, 6 ft., beautiful curly hair, black as night, and a beautiful big smile. He called me “chaparita de Oro”. Jaja! So cute. It was difficult for him to show how much he loved us, we just knew it. I'm super lucky to have a flexible schedule in which I get to hang out with my dad year round. He has shown me that men and women are equal by choosing to be a stay at home dad while my mom worked full-time. My Mexican, feminist dad, you helped me become the best version of me today.

Grocery store lunch date with dad. He had me drop him off downtown without explanation. My coworker immediately burst out laughing, " your dad looks like he's going on safari!" Life is a safari Saray.
