Island Time vs. Mexican Time
One of the complains I hear most from Americans in the islands is that the Bahamians tend to show up late and restaurant service is slow. I rarely notice enough to be bothered. Why is that? Because I have been forced to live with Mexican time most of my life! For example, say the soccer game is at 10am and your Mexican friend says they will pick you up at 9am so you can stretch and hang out before the game. Phone call at 9:05am. Me: "Hey, where you at?" Friend: "Oh, I'm on my way right now." (Is actually still in bed.) Me: "How far away are you? We said 9 o'clock." Friend: "I'm right around the corner. You should see me in a second." (Is actually slowly putting on clothes.) 20 minutes later. Friend: "Ayeeee. You know I run on Mexican time." My eye rolls cannot be accurately portrayed with words. How many times can you get frustrated by this? Me? I've figured out how to avoid the Mexican time problem, and anything next to that seems pretty tame. Disclaimer: is this in no way a suggestion that all Mexicans or all Bahamians use a different measurement of time.
