"This conversation is an offering of words for water and weavers."

Anishinaabe mat-weaving is a practice of responsible, reciprocal connection with place. Looking to historical examples while responding to current movements in Indigenous activism, this talk considers the role of weavers in the gendered labours of governance and treaty-making, the significance of bulrushes as the first water protectors, and the terms of our relations with the non-human in the face of ongoing ecological devastation.

Crystal (Mikinaak) Migwans is an Anishinaabe of Wiikwemikoong Unceded Territory and a doctoral candidate in Art History at Columbia University, currently undertaking dissertation research on natural fiber weaving traditions in the Great Lakes. Migwans' work focuses on museum objects as relatives, and the place-making labor of customary artforms.

The Power of Observation: How and Why I Make "Observational" Documentaries Kazuhiro Soda has made nine feature length documentaries in the same method and style. He calls them "observational films" not only because they are inspired by the tradition of observational cinema, but also because he believes in the power of observation. When he says "observation" in this context, he means two things. Firstly, as a filmmaker he closely looks at the reality in front of him and makes films according to his observations and discoveries, not based on the assumptions and preconceptions he had before he shot the film. Secondly, he encourages the viewers to observe the film actively with their own eyes and minds. In order to realize these two aspects, he came up with "Ten Commandments" for him to follow. They are: 1 No research. 2 No meetings with subjects. 3 No scripts. 4 Roll the camera yourself. 5 Shoot as long as possible. 6 Cover small areas deeply. 7 Do not set up a theme or goal before editing. 8 No narration, title, or music. 9 Use long takes. 10 Pay for the production yourself. In this lecture, Soda will explain how and why he takes this particular approach to documentary filmmaking. Kazuhiro Soda is a Peabody Award-winning filmmaker and a former Toyota Visiting Professor at the Center for Japanese Studies, University of Michigan. His films have been screened at such events as Berlin International Film Festival, Venice International Film Festival, Locarno International Film Festival, Busan International Film Festival, among others, winning numerous awards. His filmography includes "Campaign" (2007), "Mental" (2008), "Peace" (2010), "Theatre 1" (2012), "Theatre 2" (2012), "Campaign 2" (2013), "Oyster Factory"(2015), "Inland Sea"(2018) , and "The Big House" (2018). La pouvoir de l’observation : pourquoi et comment je réalise des documentaires observationnels

Kazuhiro Soda a réalisé neuf longs métrages documentaires selon la même méthode et dans le même style. Il les appelle des « films observationnels », non seulement parce que ses œuvres sont inspirées de la tradition du cinéma observationnel, mais aussi parce qu’il croit dans le pouvoir de l’observation. Lorsqu’il parle d’« observation » dans ce contexte, il veut dire deux choses. D’abord, comme cinéaste, il regarde de près la réalité devant lui et crée des films en fonction de ses observations et de ses découvertes, non pas en se basant sur des hypothèses et des idées préconçues qu’il aurait pu entretenir avant de prendre la caméra. Puis, il incite le spectateur à observer activement l’œuvre avec ses propres yeux et sa propre pensée. Pour arriver à concrétiser ces deux aspects, il s’est donné « dix commandements » à suivre. Les voici :

1. Aucune recherche. 2. Aucune rencontre avec les sujets. 3. Aucun scénario. 4. Tenir soi-même la caméra. 5. Filmer le plus longtemps possible. 6. Couvrir de petites zones avec grand détail. 7. Ne pas établir de thème ni d’objectif avant le montage. 8. Aucun titre, trame narrative, ni musique. 9. Faire de longs plans. 10. Payer la production de sa poche.

Dans le cadre de cette conférence, Kazuhiro Soda parlera de la façon dont il aborde cette démarche particulière dans la réalisation de documentaires et des raisons qui motivent son approche.

Cinéaste lauréat du prix Peabody et ancien professeur invité Toyota au Centre japonais d’études cinématographiques de l’Université du Michigan, Kazuhiro Soda a présenté ses œuvres dans plusieurs festivals de films internationaux – Berlin, Venise, Locarno et Busan, entre autres – où il a remporté de nombreux prix. + Rafael Lozano-Hemmer Rafael Lozano-Hemmer was born in Mexico in 1967. He was the first artist to represent Mexico at the Venice Biennale, with an exhibition at Palazzo Van Axel in 2007. He has also shown at biennials and triennials in Cuenca, Havana, Istanbul, Kochi, Liverpool, Melbourne (National Gallery of Victoria), Montreal, Moscow, New Orleans, New York (International Center of Photography), Seoul, Seville, Shanghai, Singapore and Sydney. Lozano-Hemmer’s artistic production has been the subject of monographs and performances in numerous institutions, including MUAC in Mexico City (2015), SFMOMA (2012), the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney (2011), the Manchester Art Gallery (2010), the Guggenheim Museum (2009) and the Barbican Centre in London (2008). Krzysztof Wodiczko Born in 1943 in Warsaw, Krzysztof Wodiczko lives and works in New York, Boston and Warsaw. Since the early 1980s he has produced more than eighty public projections in Australia, Austria, Canada, England, Germany, Holland, Northern Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Poland, Spain, Switzerland and the United States. At the same time, he has been designing and implementing a series of nomadic instruments and vehicles with homeless, immigrant and war veteran operators, for their survival and communication. Wodiczko won the Hiroshima Art Prize in 1998 for his contribution as an international artist to world peace, and has represented Canada and Poland at the Venice Biennale. Founded in 2016, the annual Maureen exhibitions showcase the collective work by students in the Studio Arts MFA Program. This collaborative exhibition features sculpture, photography, painting, fibres, film and video, intermedia works, and performance. Entirely organized, curated, installed and hosted by current MFA students, Maureen IV presents the diversity of aesthetic forms and lines of inquiry that are cultivated within our various research-based studio practices.

Les conférences se dérouleront en anglais. - An artwork influenced by architecture can be seen as a model for something larger, a city grid, buildings, but its scale morphs when one starts looking a it as a model that represents a different form of space or structure. The grid is a recurrent presence in Andréanne Abbondanza-Bergeron’s work. More than a formal experience in an installation form, one interest of her work is to point out the disparities between inside and outside, as they point out to various forms of built and social structures of control; dictating access or rejection into a specific structure or relationship.

In her work, Abbondanza-Bergeron aims to blend those boundaries and the potential exchange that happens in this new hybrid space. What captures her attention is the interrelation between structure and humans in space; each one possessing its own agency while also affecting the other. She approach sculpture and installation, using it as an inquiry into those social and spatial relations. Bio Andréanne Abbondanza-Bergeron is a Montreal-based installation artist and current artist-in-residence at Concordia University as the 2017 recipient of the Claudine and Stephen Bronfman Fellowship in Contemporary Art. She completed her MFA in Sculpture at Concordia University (‘16) where she received the 2016 Yvonne L. Bombardier scholarship in Visual Art, and holds a M.A. in Art Education and a BFA in Studio Arts.

Abbondanza-Bergeron’s installation, photography and drawing works have been exhibited in numerous solo and curated group shows in various Canadian cities and abroad in Germany, UK, Belgium, Mexico and the United-States. Her work has benefited from the support from the Canada Council for the Arts, the SODEC and the City of Montreal. She is a professor in the Communications, Media and Studio Arts department at Vanier College.

Une œuvre influencée par l’architecture peut-être vue comme un modèle pour une entité plus large – un réseau urbain, un bâtiment – mais son échelle se transforme lorsque l’on commence à la regarder comme un modèle qui représente une forme d’espace ou structure différente. La grille ou trame est un motif récurrent dans le travail d’Andréanne Abbondanza-Bergeron. Plus qu’une expérience formelle, ses installations tentent à faire ressortir les disparités entre les concepts d’intérieur et d’extérieur. Ses œuvres pointent vers différentes formes de structures de contrôle, qu’elles soient construites ou sociales, qui dictent l’accès ou le rejet d’une structure ou relation spécifique.

Dans ses œuvres, Abbondanza-Bergeron vise à brouiller ces limites et frontières afin de créer un potentiel d’échange qui s’effectue dans ce nouvel espace hybride. Ce qui capture son attention est l’interrelation entre les structures et les personnes dans l’espace; chacun possédant une influence et un impact sur l’autre. Elle approche la sculpture et l’installation tel une étude des liens entre espaces et relations interpersonnelles.

Biographie Artiste d’installation établie à Montréal, Andréanne Abbondanza-Bergeron est actuellement artiste en résidence à l’Université Concordia en tant que lauréate 2017 de la bourse Claudine-et-Stephen-Bronfman en art contemporain. Elle a obtenu une maîtrise ès beaux-arts en sculpture à l’Université Concordia (en 2016), établissement où elle a reçu la bourse d’études supérieures en arts visuels Yvonne-L.-Bombardier 2016, et détient une M.A. en éducation artistique ainsi qu’un B. Bx-arts en arts plastiques. Ses installations, photographies et dessins ont fait l’objet de nombreuses expositions individuelles et collectives présentées dans différentes villes canadiennes ainsi qu’ailleurs dans le monde, en Allemagne, au Royaume-Uni, au Mexique et aux États-Unis. Son travail a bénéficié du soutien du Conseil des arts du Canada, de la SODEC et de la Ville de Montréal. Mme Abbondanza-Bergeron est professeure au département de communication, de médias et d’arts plastiques du cégep Vanier.
