Introduction

Hi there! My name’s Bev. I’ve been lurking in the studyblr and studygram community for quite some time now. I’m kind of late to the party but I figured it’s time for me to start my own blog! About Me 🌱

- I’m 24 years old

- I am born and raised in the Bay Area (CA)

- I am a major cat lady

- I live with a tuxedo cat and a naked Sphynx cat!

- I live for milk tea

- I am a volunteer crisis counselor at Crisis Text Line

Academics 🌱

- I am a graduate student studying marriage and family therapy (MFT) with a emphasis on clinical counseling

- I started graduate school in the spring of 2019

- I earned my bachelors in biology and minor in environmental studies

- I originally wanted to become a veterinarian but realized my strong desire and interest in psychology and therapy!

- My dream is to work in an inpatient or outpatient psychiatric facility (but I am open to all sorts of ideas!)

- Current courses I’m taking: Development in the Family Life Cycle, Psychopharmacology

- Past courses: Contemporary Issues in MFT, Psychopathology, Couples Counseling, Child-Focused Family Therapy

Goals 🌱

Therapist in Training Chronicles.

last night at work one of the shelter residents (13yo) was battling a schizophrenic episode. 

she was having a really strong physical reaction and was also frustrated and saddened to have been triggered. i always wondered and worried how i would be able to be there for a client in the moment of an episode. thankfully, my program's teachings came almost naturally. i stayed with her, explored her triggers, praised her for sharing with staff she needed help and was using coping skills, pointed out her positive assets i had noticed both presently and throughout the day, listened empathetically, and validated her feelings. we did deep breathing together and this ended up bringing her anxiety down. she was able to rejoin the group and finish her night.

now, i know im no therapist yet. but what a comfort to know that im competent for where im at, at the very least. whats funny is ive been real down on myself lately. ive been concerned about how i respond so emotionally. but in the moment, it wasnt about me. it was about her. and i was fine.

its my first semester. i need to chill tf out.

I have survived my first 2 wks of grad school!

Not to brag or anything, but I'm totally acing all my classes ;)

Second week of second semester of grad school and I:

Am keeping up on all my reading

Have attended all my classes so far

Have actively participated

Have been assigned two professors and 6 undergrad classes for my GA

Am on top of all my work for my GA

Have office hours like a real GA

Have a wonderful 5th floor office (with actual windows! woohoo!) for said office hours (still waiting on an actual desk though)

Oh yeah, and that GA pays half my tuition and 1/3 my health insurance. Woohoo!

I'm actually kicking ass at this grad school thing. And I actually feel like a grad school student finally. I'll get back to you when we start seeing clients next semester though haha. And when I start my capstone in about a month...
