There was something about summer in New York City. A warm reprieve was more than welcomed after months of a seemingly endless gray. Egypt cooled in the winters, but it was nothing what America's east coast subjected its residents to. Long called a citizen of the world, Layla had only visited New York once as a child. The trip had actually been to an archaeological conference in Washington D.C. Somehow, Layla had convinced Abdallah to make the train ride up the coast to New York so they could spend a day or two in the city. After visits to the Natural History Museum and Met, she had all but tugged him into the blinding lights of Times Square. It may as well have been a different world from the one they normally spent their days in, and both had been relieved to go home.

Now, home looked different. Home was in the shape of a many minded man whose arms were the start of her world. There was more to her life, of course, but the London flat or Cairo apartment were just spaces she had a key to. Layla had been a child often on the move. Her sanctuary, once found in her father, was now in Marc. It had been all the more devastating each time she lost him because of this. It wasn't just an empty half of the bed that taunted in the night. It was a lack of security that ate at her.

The Midnight Mission of Earth-Prime was only temporary housing. It was occupied by another Marc who was not her Marc and a cast of characters that was foreign outside of Jean-Paul. Even though it was nice to have a place to stay, Layla tried to be outside as much as possible. Her schedule often conflicted with Marc's. The two avatar's remained perpetually busy, which made the time they did together all the more valuable.

Sunlight warmed freckled cheeks as Layla scanned the crowded paved walkway. Central Park was full of tourists and locals who lounged on blankets and played fetch with their panting dogs. They were all inconsequential in that moment. All Layla cared about was the one hand that was wrapped around Marc's, connecting the two spouses through intertwined fingers. In her other hand she balanced an iced coffee; before her contract with Tawaret, the caffeine would have left her buzzing. Now, it was just a pleasant sweetness. She felt revitalized in ways she couldn't have imagined herself being, even with the mess they found themselves in.

"True or false: Central Park was the result of a competition?" She asked, one brow raising as she glanced at Marc. "You get it wrong, you cook tonight."

Day 1 + Night 1

voting lasts for who knows how long

I’m gonna try to mention all the players so you all get notified

No one could come to a consensus. That much was clear.

“Sorry, but I fail to see how killing anyone is going to be of use to us now,” said agentsoflame, speaking up before accusations could fly.

“I don’t know about that,” dontraynamyparade piped up, shooting a glance at arminsslytherinstreak. “There are some people here I’ve never quite been able to trust, and this seems like a perfect opportunity for them.”

noodleship stepped forward. “Perhaps a certain armins-garments has something to say on the matter?”

Rhiannon grew increasingly impatient as the arguing continued. “Alright, that’s enough of that!” she snapped. “We’ll put this to a vote. I’ve had enough violence for one day.”

“I say we don’t kill anyone,” suggested thestereotypebuster. Four other heads nodded in agreement, and after a quick survey around the room, the proposal seemed to be favored by most.

As night fell, all the suspects returned to their respective rooms, locking their doors tight in the hopes no one would come for them in the night - all but one.

A figure leaned against the wall next to undonesia’s doorway, perfectly obscured by the way the shadows fell in their corner of the hall. They waited in silence, keeping a close watch on any movement in the house.

Suddenly, they heard a faint mechanical clicking as the door they hid next to began to unlock itself. Out crept undonesia, on tip-toe, surveying the corridor. The figure froze as her eyes swept right over them, hoping the comfort of the shadow wouldn’t give them away.

It didn’t.

“Rem!” she exclaimed in a breathless whisper, noticing a familiar face a few doors down.

removerapersona silently made her way over - the two embraced briefly, then carefully made their way down the stairs. The figure waited until the pair had reached the bottom before leaving the protection of the shadow.

The two spoke in excited whispers.

“So, I figure the killers must be after something more than just her fortune,” said Rem. “Thoughts, Ink?”

The figure frowned. What was that supposed to mean...?

“You don’t suppose they need it for something?” offered Inky.

Three pairs of eyes widened at the click-click of a gun hidden in the shadows.

Not on my watch, the figure thought to themselves.

Inky turned to see the tip of the gun just behind Rem’s head.

“Rem, no!” she screamed, pushing Rem out of the way as she heard the first shot.

Rem watched in horror as Inky collapsed in front of her. She knelt down, too distressed to be bothered with the presence of a murderer.

“Y-you!” Inky spluttered, looking up at the dim face of her killer. “How could-”

“Why did you have to get involved?” the killer asked. “I was only after Rem.”

Rem slowly raised her head to find herself looking down the barrel of a gun. Her eyes darted upwards, realizing who had done the deed, then down for one last desperate glance at Inky.

The figure had already fled the scene when they heard the second shot, and had begun banging on the doors.

“There’s been a murder!” they shouted at the top of their lungs, hoping to drag as many people as possible out of their beds. In the frenzy to get downstairs to the scene of the crime, the figure wasn’t sure whether the killer had managed to mingle with the rest unseen.

“Not again,” lamented mapshole.

“Two murders? That can’t be right,” said winemomhendrix, still trying to process the situation.

“Rem and Inky both,” added strawberry-froyo, aghast.

A long moment of silence passed, as no one was quite sure what to say in such a situation.

“If only someone had been there to stop it,” remarked thesmallestonewasme.

Removerapersona and undonesia have died! They were the Lovers! 

It is now day phase. Given the very long delay in this update, I’ll allow for extra time to get reoriented, revisit what happened last phase, and maybe catch up on some URL changes. If anyone wishes to drop out at this point, let me know, and I’ll find a substitute. Also, mafia - if you need the link/pass to the chat, let me know!
