I'm 100% sure that I had a panic attack like a few days ago because I remember being freaked out afterwards but I don't remember what actually happened. I always vividly remember but I don't remember it and that's terrifying. Is it normal to forget?
Hello lovely
Thank you for contacting The mental health advice blog with your ask. Having panic attacks are unbearable and i myself understand fully, so i hope my advice can be beneficial today.
In my experience it is natural to forget panic attacks, this is because your brain tries to protect itself. This is because the memory is very fragile and panic attacks causes stress in the body therefore you increase cortisol which can lead to forgetfulness.
It is normal to forget but equally as scary. Remember though that your body is trying to protect itself, However, the more you have anxiety about forgetfulness, then more you will panic, then the more you will forget and you are trapped in a vicious circle!!
Also, remember breathing techniques, meditation, and self care. You have to look after yourself and take control of your panic attacks, this in turn will aid your memory loss. Continue to speak about your panic and learn any techniques that will assist in overcoming anxiety.
Myself, personally, have been affected by panic/anxiety attacks, i used to forget the attack or what happened during the attack. Now i am in recovery i just have memory loss that affects me day to day. However it was because it was not recognised and i did not control my panic and anxiety for such a long time. Although it is improving with recovery.
