ヒロインは誰なのか？／Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nationの感想

　Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nationを見たので感想を書きます。ヒロイン枠は誰か？みたいな話です。もう完全にブログが迷走してますが。

　Rogue Nationを見る前からtwitterで「ヒロイン枠は誰か」みたいな話題は見かけていて、そのときは「ヒロイン枠はベンジー」という答えとセットでした。まだベンジーが誰かも知らないときです。で、さいわい知人に誘ってもらって映画を見て(面白かったです)、ほんとだヒロイン枠はベンジーだと思い。数日して、ほんとにそうかな？と。

　ここで問題になってるヒロイン枠っていわゆるdamsel in distressのことですよね。悪役(男性)に捕らわれていて、ヒーロー(男性)に助けられる、危機にある美しい女性。ピーチ姫なんかがそうです。悪役クッパに誘拐されてマリオに助けられるお姫さま。なんでRogue Nationで誰がdamsel in distress枠か(damsel in distressがいるのか)が問題になるかといえば、それはdamsel in distressが女性を無力で男性に救い出されなければならない弱い存在として、男性同士の間でやりとりされる財産として描き、男性がヒーローであるための便利な踏み台として利用するものだから。

　で、取り沙汰されるRogue Nationのdamsel in distressは誰なんでしょうね？

　ぱっと見はやっぱりベンジーです。あからさまに誘拐されるし。助けられなきゃいけない状況に陥って、実際イーサンが助けにくるし。若くて美しい女性ではないですがマッチョではないチャーミングさがあるし、イーサンに一番愛情を示すのもベンジーだし。

　じゃあRogue Nationは、若い女性に押しつけられてきたdamsel in distressをベンジーに振りわけた点で類型的な語りを脱した＝いまどきの配慮した映画なんでしょうか？

　そうじゃない気がするんです。イルサはイルサでやっぱりdamsel in distressとみなせます。強く賢い女性であからさまに誘拐されはしませんが、所属する場所を奪われて、望まない男性ボスのもとで動かざるを得ない。そして最後にイーサンによって解放される。悪役の男性に束縛・所有されていて、ヒーローの男性に救われる、若くて美しい危機にある女性。最後にイーサンとラブが実るタイプの「ヒロイン枠」ではなくても、Rogue Nationで彼女のたどる物語はdamsel in distress枠とみなすことはできる。

　じゃあイルサがdamsel in distress枠にいることは、Rogue Nationの描く女性像の限界を示しているのか？

　それもちがうと思うんです。まず、「ベンジーかイルサか」という二択を捨てましょう。「イルサがdamsel in distress、ヒロイン枠だ」に「いやヒロイン枠はベンジーだ」と返しても反論としてあんまり有効じゃない。見方によってはどちらもヒロイン枠だから。でもここまでで少なくとも、ヒロイン枠をふたつに分散させていると見ることはできる。男性と女性に振りわけているのも面白いとこだと思います。

　でももう一人いますよね、助けられてる人が。イーサンです。Rogue Nationで一番具体的に死にかけるのってイーサンですよね？水の中で…。イルサがイーサンを救いだしたところでAEDが持ち出されているので、イーサンはほんとに死にかけていたことがわかります。冒頭の場面で拉致されたイーサンを助けるのもイルサです。ここでの構図は誘拐する悪役＝bone doctor、誘拐されるdamsel in distress＝イーサン、助けにくるヒーロー＝イルサです。Rogue Nationでベンジーをヒロイン枠とみなすことが当たり前になされているなら、もう少し角度を変えればイーサンもdamsel in distress枠です。

　ここまでくると、ヒロイン枠、damsel in distressという枠のほうを捨てたほうがよさそうです。じゃあ、そうすることでRogue Nationの何が見えてくるか。

　結局、この人たちは助けあっている、ってことなんじゃないでしょうか。ヒーロー(イーサン)がヒロイン(ベンジーもしくはイルサ)を助けるのではなく、みんなで助けあいのネットワークの中にいる。イーサンはベンジーのこともイルサのことも助けるけど、ベンジーだってイーサンのことを助けるし、もちろんイルサは何回もイーサンを助けます。この助けあいは純粋なものではないかもしれません。ベンジーがオペラの劇場に向かう時点では、イーサンを助けたいと思っているベンジーに対してイーサンのほうは危なくない段階まではベンジーの手を借りようくらいの考えなのかもしれない。でもイーサンは君を助けたいんだというベンジーの申し出を受け入れる。イルサがイーサンを助けるために水に入るときにも計算は相当あったはずです。それでもイルサはイーサンを見捨てる選択肢をとらない。誘拐されたベンジーを助けたあとのイーサンとイルサの共闘の仕方は、二人が打算と助けあいのネットワークによって結ばれていることをよく示しています。

　この3人だけではなくて、上層部にも打算と助けあいのネットワークは構築されます。CIA長官のハンリーはIMFが目の敵なわけですが、シンジケートの正体が明かされる場面で彼も選択を迫られます。このまま強硬にIMFのやりかたを拒むか、イーサンのシナリオにのって手柄の分け前を受けとるか。ハンリーが得を取ることがイーサンとIMFを助けることにもなる。ハンリーが選ぶのも助けあいです。打算が選ばせる選択ではありますが、互恵的な、助けあいのネットワークにハンリーも参入する。

　そして、イーサンたちの助け合いのネットワークに対置されるのが、レーンの使い捨てのネットワークです。ちょっと覚えてないんですがイルサかイーサンかが言いますよね、部下は使い捨てだって。レーンは登場したしょっぱなからレコード店の女性を殺します。用が済んだんでしょうね。使い捨てです。レーンによって遣わされイーサンが倒していくモブキャラたちも使い捨てです。イルサも使い捨てる気でいます。でも、他者を使い捨てる人は誰かを使うことはできても誰かに助けられることはない。助け合いのネットワークを構築しないレーンは、最終的に、助け合いのネットワークによって生きている人々によって捕らわれる。

　ということは、Rogue Nationはヒーローが危機にあるヒロイン(それが誰であれ)を助ける話じゃないってことです。むしろ、助けあいのネットワークと使い捨てのネットワークが対置されたうえで、性別を問わず助け合う人たちが生き残る話です。危機にある人はいます。それをヒロインと呼ぶことはできるかもしれない。でも状況によって誰がヒロインかが変わるし、女性かもしれないし男性かもしれない。というか、damsel in distressは誰かという問いの答えによっては作品を測ることができない。主要な女性キャラクターがイルサのみであること、あるいはサイモン・ペグが指摘した宣伝ポスターでの男女のイメージの差などの問題は残りますが、少なくともお話のつくりにおいては。Rogue Nationを見ていて気持ちがいいのはそういうところなのかな、と思いました。

Ethan Hunt is an alien with metahuman physical abilities, hardiness, and healing capabilities. Like Kryptonian, only different. He instantly recognized Ilsa Faust as a member of his otherwise-extinct alien race.

Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation Quickie Review

Just saw the 5th Mission Impossible movie, so here’s my thoughts:

+ Exceptional action and stunts

Say what you will about Tom Cruise, but he is one gutsy sonovabitch. He's like a modern-day 53-year-old incarnation of Buster Keaton with an adrenaline obsession; he’s always one-upping himself with just how ludicrous his stunts can get. Last movie had him hanging by his fingertips off the side of the Burj Khalifa, and in this one he’s diving into whirlpools, jumping off of motorcycles, and hanging from the sides of planes. Those stunts are all still real, and still often seat-squirmingly suspenseful.

+ Superb spy thriller story

Spy thrillers are at their best when there’s a mystery to solve, and when the answers aren’t immediately obvious. This one pulls some twists and turns that are really interesting, and can cause for some tense moments when you don’t know all the answers yet. The villain is menacing and memorable, and throughout the film he keeps giving more and more reason for you to be personally invested in his demise. And while this is by far the most complex Mission Impossible story, it’s also still a lot of fun, and the group dynamic of the IMF team/family retains its charm.

+ Visual Storytelling

The Mission: Impossible movies have received a lot of flak from the beginning for leaning slightly on the cartoony side when it comes to the design of the gadgets and technology. However, this movie makes it clear that the somewhat-exaggerated cartoon universe that these movies take place in is a strength when it comes to compelling storytelling. When fog starts pouring in through the vents, you know immediately that there’s poison gas, instead of hearing a hissing noise and seeing someone fall over. When someone’s underwater, it’s best to have a large timer on her wrist to show how long she’s been down there. This sort of thing saves time and frees up the script, since you don’t have to explain that a thingy can pick a lock if it has a hologram of a key on it, or that a car has a fingerprint recognition system if it lights up whenever someone puts their hand on a window. More directors should take note: pure realism isn’t always better, sometimes it’s best to make things clear to the audience without the need for dialogue.

- Slightly Sexist

Of course there’s only one female character. She’s an exceptional character and I hope we’ll see her again in future installments (though probably not), but there’s still only one of her. And there are some gratuitous, male gaze-y shots of her, as is unfortunately expected. And she says that someone should “be a man” at one point. Oh well, can’t win ‘em all.

- Obvious product placement

Simon Pegg uses a CIA data server to play Halo 5 at one point. It’s a funny moment, but it still felt a little off. Oh, and super-spies apparently all use Windows phones now. It’s an “in” thing. Microsoft really paid a lot for this movie, huh

FINAL VERDICT:

The Mission: Impossible movies all have one mission, should they choose to accept: be better than the last one. And just like their team of super-agents, they always seem to pull off the impossible. This is by far the best 5th movie in a franchise that I have ever seen (aside from maybe James Bond movies, which aren’t even in the same continuity anyway), and the best Mission: Impossible movie yet. Were it not for Mad Max: Fury Road, Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation would definitely be by far the best action movie this summer.
