summary: mia has known about the horrors brewing underneath the surface and her fiancee's involvement in it for too long now. not only is her engagement dragging on, but so has her investigation.

a/n: so basically the gist is that i headcanon that mia is actually trying to uncover the secrets of the d.d.d. and i finally decided to follow up on it by actually showing what event pushed her into finally taking action (anyway, creds to @yellochan for this wonderful art of mia that i used!!!!! as well as @/strangergraphics for the ao3 dividers ^^)
The circled number on the calendar felt like a countdown to an impending doom and if Mia could burn a hole into it with just her gaze, she already would have from how intensely she has been staring at it.
How many times had she extended the deadline at this point? And it wasn't even just a day or two of extension — she asked for months. A January wedding becomes June, then June becomes October, and so on and so forth until their engagement has already reached its third year anniversary.
Can anyone believe that? An engagement having an anniversary longer than most people's relationships?
Mia frowned and her hand shook as it reached for the edge of the calendar. In her mind, she pictured tearing it off, throwing away the golden band in her pouch, and calling off their engagement. But what then? Would she be able to live on her own with the nightmares of those people's untimely demise at the hands of her fiancée's organization? Would she be able to give up right when she was so close to uncovering the full truth and publicizing it?
Tears pricked the corner of her eyes, threatening to ruin the mascara she had already applied for the day ahead. In that blurry haze, the back of the calendar started seeping red and the calendar she was holding felt wet.
Blood.
Mia's breath caught in the back of her throat and her eyes went wide. Her feet stayed planted on the ground as she watched more blood continuing to leak out from under the calendar and soaking it slowly.
Where's… Whose blood—
An arm burst through the calendar, sounding a crack in the wall that made Mia finally jump back and fall on her behind.
"Mia…" Multiple voices wailed in sync as more arms emerged from the crack in the wall and wriggled desperately. She recognized those voices even combined: the soft lilt of the neighborly old woman who used to share with her her pies, the deep baritone of the gentleman who used to pester Afton, and more. "Avenge…… us……"
Mia shook her head rapidly. This couldn't be real, she thought. It must all just be a trick of her mind.
Still, she backed away from the wall like a helpless dame and took short gasps while clutching her chest. Once her back hit something solid, the illusion disappeared in a blink as if it was just a curse that had been dispelled.
Mia exhaled loudly and hung her head low, choosing her red skirt as an interesting vantage point while catching her breath.

Finally, she sighed and looked up at the ceiling while panting slightly.
Her eyes felt heavy and the darkness in the back of her mind lingered over her periphery. Spirits or hallucinations, whichever it was, Mia's nightmares have stopped waiting for night to come and are haunting her during the day now.
And if she doesn't find the truth soon, they might as well latch onto her in every single waking moment of her life.
She's a teacher for primary school, but wants to eventually rise in ranks and become an English professor.
Her gentle and patient personality makes her great for dealing with children.
Unlike her fiancé, she is capable of breaking down complex topics into simple explanations; her emotional and social intellect are also traits that Afton admires.

His papers say he's a physicist, but he presents himself to everyone else as a 'physician' which isn't too far off, he does have a hospital job as a cover-up for his real job as the leader of the Trojan Horse project.
He was a child prodigy whose genius gave him the ability to finish college at the age of 16.
His father was the previous leader of the Trojan Horse project and he wanted to join at a much earlier age, but got sent by his father to study overseas to avoid the war.
Unironically, he was loved and cared for by his father. Though he had no mother, he wasn't particularly concerned with having one anyway. It is his curiosity that drives him to pursue darker and inhumane experiments.
Once Afton has a goal in mind, he will do anything to accomplish it---he is a consequentialist, meaning he believes that the ends will always justify the means.
He absolutely abhors the idea of dealing with others' emotions and detests emotional people.
His engagement with Mia was, at first, an arrangement to acquire more wealth for his project, but as time went by and a certain consistent donor came around, their relationship became one of mutual respect and admiration on Afton's side.
He doesn't question it whenever Mia postpones the marriage (although it has been like, what, 2-3 years since they got engaged?) because he doesn't really care for it.
He is a loner and doesn't interact with the other neighbors as much.

His job as a milkman has a strict routine and he has to wake up very early to deliver milk because of the threat of doppelgangers, but at least it pays handsomely in a period where delivery jobs are life-threatening.
He actually got the job in order to keep him and his family from being put in the lower class apartments, however, Nacha disapproved of it and it made their relationship rocky.
He ended up cheating on her and getting a divorce.
He gave up custody of Anastacha to Nacha because he didn't see himself as fit to raise her on his own (at the time, the custody battle was almost always guaranteed to be in favor of the father).
Has a lot of regrets in his life and feel unfulfilled in general.
He never went to college because he wanted to work early to support him and his mom.
He's a war veteran, can you see it in his eyes? Lol.
Rarely sleeps, rarely eats, rarely drinks water. But he's sure damn consistent about smoking every night.

He dedicates his entire focus and life to assassinating doppelgangers and doesn't see himself as fit for having any romantic relationships at present.
Steven is serious and stoic, and doesn't really like joking around much.
He can be quite the worrywart when it comes to his dad because he doesn't want a repeat of what happened to his mom.
He has a special interest in plane models and keeps a collection of them.
Because of his serious nature, he doesn't have that many friends and Mclooy tries desperately to get his son to socialize more.
He's incredible at cooking and usually cooks for his dad before leaving for his job.
He's half-American and half-British.
He doesn't trust many people, but he does like to exchange doppelganger stories with the milkman next door.

He's a retired veteran from the first world war and was a fighter pilot himself. Unfortunately, due to an injury he sustained that almost took his life, he had to be sent back early and couldn't get another job.
His attitude towards life is rather positive, though. Mclooy likes to think "wallowing in the negative side of life will never get you anywhere" so he remains optimistic despite his circumstances.
A proud Texan and American. Almost a complete stereotype.
He's using a cane to walk around because of his injury.
His reason for being outside is falsified most of the time. Mclooy usually goes to a bar and gets drunk off his ass before going home.
A flirty drunk type. He usually ends up flirting with women who are noticeably younger than him and Steven facepalms because of this.
Despite being a bit of a misogynist, he doesn't mind the gays, so yay???
He likes his cigar strong, his whiskey neat, and his life constantly at risk.
Has never rode a horse before but thinks he definitely can do it on the first try.
Likes to prank some of the other neighbors like the Cappuccins.
Has a gun with him that he uses to shoot down doppelgangers with.
Likes to tell Steven stories about his time serving the military and some of it are not so family-friendly.
Likes to make crude jokes.

[6] Alf Cappuccin
A prosecution attorney who sometimes uses unfair means to ensure a court ruling in his favor.
Born to a family of lawyers, Alf didn't actually want to be a lawyer, but he still took it up because it was a guaranteed job for him.
His cowardly demeanor and short stature makes him the type to be easily baited and made a fool out of, especially for people like Mclooy.
He perceives many of the neighbors as beneath him and his wife in terms of status. Unfortunately for him, his job as a lawyer hasn't been paying all that well lately especially since doppelgangers are more of a risk than pushing for a court case and him and his wife had to be moved from an upperclass apartment to a middleclass one.
He likes to present himself as a proper and elegant gentleman, even going to such lengths as putting on a monocle (which Mclooy likes to call costume glasses).
He's one of the oldest residents of the apartment, only second to Mclooy.
Because of his job and unfair tactics, he has earned quite a lot of enemies himself --- particularly in the lower class --- and this is possibly why he's always on his guard (other than doppelgangers, that is).
He likes to keep his moustache trimmed and covering his mouth at all times.
Truth is, he doesn't get much of a say in terms of his own financial income. It is Rafttellyn that usually handles the money and he just lets her because he's a simp he respects her deeply.
He is Italian.

[7] Rafttellyn Cappuccin
She was a spoiled brat born to rich parents who ended up disowning her so she can get a taste of the real world. Rafttellyn tried finding a rich husband while working "lowly jobs" and came across Alf during her job as a waitress.
Alf doesn't know about her being disowned and her reason for going out is actually falsified. She isn't visiting her parents, but rather, going out shopping.
She used to be in a trio with Lois and Margarette, hence their matching pearl necklaces, however, Lois found out about the crude things Rafttellyn was saying about Roman behind her back and their friendship ended as soon as it came.
She does still talk to Margarette, however, and she is mostly weirded out by how eager and all red she gets whenever Rafttellyn is talking to her.
She boasts about being as beautiful as the Sverchzt twins when she was younger, but she refuses to show a photo for proof.
She's very bigoted and a classist. Despite living among middleclass people and being middleclass now herself, she still acts with that pompous rich attitude she has carried with her since she was a child.
She is extremely insecure about her looks and has had one too many cosmetic surgery before, although, one of them (specifically the one for her double chin) almost got botched.
Her envy towards younger women is strong and malicious.
She likes flaunting her diamond ring around.
She rolls her eyes a lot.
Despite living in the same apartment as Alf, she doesn't actually talk to him and will always find excuses to leave the conversation whenever he does try to talk to her.
She regrets marrying Alf and thinks he's way too old and ugly for her.
What if some of the TNMN characters were in Baldi's Basics (BBiEaL)?? Like, what would they do/be their purpose? Like, I could see Quachil or Mia in it
Mia: Similar to Mrs Pomp (BB+), but instead of screaming or chasing you if you don't get to her class, she would call Principal (Principal of The Thing) and you would be put in detention
Quachil: Since she creates misfortune in TNMN, she would do similar things as Playtime, but if you fail whatever game she tries to play with you, she calls Baldi and gives away your location, but you can't hear because she speaks telepathically, or just makes something terrible happen to you
Idk about you guys, but I kinda like my idea, lemme know if u have any ideas to support this idea! :)
