Throwback Thursday!
It was pointed out to me that the debut album from House of Lords was released 28 years ago this week. Wow . . . time flies when you’re having fun, right?
This album was special to me on a number of levels. I met some lifelong friends, met some incredible musicians, and contributed to what I believe is some music that actually stands the test of time, for the most part anyway. For some of the songs I’d rather re-write sections of the lyrics frankly, but overall there is some great music here.
On this record, I worked closely with a childhood “idol” of mine Gene Simmons, (KISS was the first concert I ever saw), had the opportunity to work with the legendary record producer Andy Johns (Led Zeppelin, Cream, Van Halen, etc. etc. ad nauseum), and worked inside some of the most famous recording studios in the world such as Ocean Way Recording, Cherokee Studios, and many others.
We toured the world based off of this record, or at least the parts of the world that were the most important in terms of record sales (true story), and we had fun doing it as well.
Modern Drummer Magazine wrote some very nice things about me based on this recording. I do not agree with all of it, but I appreciated the thought. ”A major reason for their (House of Lords) originality, if not the major reason, is Ken Mary’s drumming. Unquestionably, he is the best hard rock drummer in America today. Nobody plays like Ken Mary.”
Not to be a contrarian, but the band’s sound was a combination of the very special musicianship that each member of the band possessed. And to say one person is “unquestionably” the best at anything is somewhat ludicrous IMHO. There are so many amazing musicians out there, at a certain point it just becomes “apples and oranges.” It really just comes down to whose art moves you the most.
I'm sharing some "never before seen" photos from my personal collection. Some of these are at our rehearsal preparing for the first tour, and some at an “in store.” This is where the artists went to a facility called a “record store” and people could come in and have their CD’s signed, lol.
So! House of Lords, House of Lords, Happy 28th anniversary! I think I was supposed to get you an Amethyst or something . . . but I forgot. Sorry . . .
