Have you seen V.R. Troopers (1994-1996)?
Yes
Partially
No, but I've heard of it
Never heard of it
This week's guest is Michael Hollander, senior character animator at Telltale Games. You've no doubt seen his work through some of their best-selling titles, including Batman, The Walking Dead, and Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy. (And if you were a kid in the 90s like I was, you'll probably recognize him from the unsung superhero action series V.R. Troopers!) Wait until you hear his story!
Michael talked about how he got his big break into acting and modeling, and the shift that occurred which changed his career trajectory towards design and animation. Michael also has a lot of great advice for those of you looking to get into the entertainment industry, and we briefly touch on the issues of diversity and representation. It's really inspiring and amazing to hear how Michael has carved out a niche for himself, and I really think you'll learn a lot from his experiences. This interview is a great one!

“Michael Bacon in VR Troopers,” Episode 1, “The Battle Begins, Part 1”
Michael sat in the library, poring over textbooks, trying desperately to absorb enough information to try and get something resembling a paper together. It was due in the morning and, true to form, Michael had only just started work on it. Art History. Whose idea was it to make that a compulsory course, anyway? Michael just wanted to paint and draw and draw and paint, sell commissions online, maybe do some 3D modelling or web design. But no, he needed a history credit or he wouldn’t get his stupid piece of paper saying he was half-decent at making pretty things. Hell, if he hadn’t gotten the arts scholarship he probably wouldn’t even be here; gods know he wasn’t going to take out a loan, and his parents sure as shit couldn’t send him to university.
He looked at the clock. Shit, it's eleven thirty already, he grumbled internally, I'm fucked.
This was not the first paper he'd procrastinated on for the course. It didn't help he had little to no rapport with the professor, let alone that he couldn't retain much of the subject matter. He remembered Prof Whatever-Her-Name-Was making quite a fuss about the Renaissance and the return of classical-style art in Europe, and hoped he could maybe squeeze a few hundred words out on the subject, but he was having trouble nailing dates and names down in his head.
"I am going to fail this course," he all but sang as he turned another page. He had written so far exactly one sentence, and he wasn't even sure it was any good:
The Renaissance was a period of extreme evolution in visual art in Europe.
What did that even mean? Michael sighed and sat back in his chair, just about to give up. He was going to fail, and he wouldn't finish the year, and he'd end up back in his parents' house, jobless and penniless and with nothing to show for his three month stint at uni. What a waste of a free ride.
