Originally produced in 16mm film for the Aspen Center for the Arts (1980), MIT (1980), and SFMOMA (1984), and in digital video for the Art Center College of Design (2005).

Michael Naimark : pionnier du vidéodisque interactif, auteur de nombreuses études dans les « films dimensionnalisés » comme il les appelle. Be now Here, 1995-1997 : environnement virtuel immersif, écran de projection stéréoscopique (rendu d'un relief) et un plancher pivotant sur lequel se place le spectateur. Celui-ci se retrouve au milieu d'images de sites inscrits sur la liste du patrimoine mondial en péril établie par l'UNESCO. Muni de lunettes 3D, utilisateur choisit une heure et un lieu précis au moyen d'une interface d'accès placée sur un socle.

Much of Michael Naimark’s work deals with consumption and the relation between reality and unreality. His work Eyepiece is no different, the installation consisting of unnerving eye footage being projected onto a rounded screen. The second version, titled Computer Eyepiece, was reshot with live footage for a different show.

Naimark’s portfolio prides itself on disorienting the viewer, and forcing them to question the optical illusion style technology he puts forth. In a piece titled Talking Head Projection, also from 1979, Naimark projects footage onto a face shaped canvas, this time with the addition of audio. This floating head creates an illusion of AI technology that was impossible for the time.

Displacements 2005/michael naimark

Displacements is an immersive film installation. An archetypal Americana living room was installed in an exhibition space. Then two performers were filmed in the space using a 16mm motion picture camera on a slowly rotating turntable in the room’s center. After filming, the camera was replaced with a film loop projector and the entire contents of the room were spray-painted white. The reason was to make a projection screen the right shape for projecting everything back onto itself. The result was that everything appears strikingly 3D, except for the people, who of course weren’t spray-paint white, and consequently appeared very ghostlike and unreal.
