“This life we choose isn’t easy, we use our gifts, pushing ourselves to help, courting failure all the while. And when we do fail, it’s usually others who pay the price. You need to own those failures, and either find the strength to move on, or let it destroy you.” - Art and Dialog from Cave Carson Has a Cybernetic Eye #7 by Gerard Way, John Rivera and Michael Oeming.

Dick Tracy Forever #2
Dick Tracy Forever #2 IDW Publishing 2019 By Michael Avon Oeming Coloured by Taki Soma Lettered by Shawn Lee Dick Tracy is Sisyphus, pushing the law-boulder up the hill as he struggles for reason and order in a world with none. His attempts at law and order are met with crime and chaos, in the form of unpredictable and absurd villains. But Dick Tracy will never give up trying, no matter the era or incarnation. Join Eisner Award-winning creator Michael Avon Oeming on a startling case through time and space! So while we are jumping around a bit from case to case the sheer fact that everything has the same look and feel throughout and that we see his signature look come into being and that damned watch of his it just feels right. I’d love to see this version of Dick Tracy stick around a while and be the one translated to the big screen, we’ll forget about the Warren Beatty and Madonna one. This has that whole Dick’s unshakable desire to uphold the law, it is completely tongue-in-cheek and it has that certain je ne sais quoi. I love the way that this is being told with these little vignette's that showcase moments that seem important to understand who Dick Tracy is. Also whomever decided that Pirate Billy should have plumber’s butt I think you. Still I like being introduced to English Bob and Pirate Billy this way it has a charm to it that not only brings them into Dick’s world but it also gives us the view of Dick from a different angle. The characterisation here is phenomenal and this opening makes me want to see more of these two, either sharing a cell or having escaped, preferably the latter. Alright the second half of the book takes us through to the end of the issue. I am super impressed with the way we see the pacing here. The way the ebb & flow of the book is done through revelations, meetings, actions & reactions and yes some dialogue make every page something of a surprise. Having no idea what is coming next is fun, exciting and keeps the reader engaged, involved and feeling a part of the story. Also that Michael seems to be expanding his Rogues gallery by leaps and bounds is fantastic. I don’t know why but it feels like they all have to be seen now because something big with them is coming later. I am totally digging the interiors here. The linework is sensational and how it’s utilised so that we see all these crazy men in his rogues gallery that fit their names or the names are from their looks is so incredibly well done. The utilisation of the page layouts and how see the angles and perspective in the panels show this strong eye for storytelling. I really like how the panels are composed and with or without the utilisation of backgrounds we see exactly what we need to and this comes as a result of someone who is talented enough to both write it and then illustrate their own work. Also the introduction of “Bricks Walker” Private Dick and his whole colour scheme it is a great touch. The colours are great and while we seem to get your standard old school work what we see is so extremely well done that I can’t help but admire it. Sometimes it can appear hard to take a popular Sunday Cartoon Strip and make it into a popular comic book. But Michael and Taki take the original and run with it. It pays a beautiful homage to the past and has all that fun, quirkiness and intelligence we expect and it’s also surprisingly complex as most modern tales usually are. While it’s true I have no idea where the heck all this is going or what’s really going on but I do know that I am enjoying the heck outta this and I cannot get enough of it and I can’t wait to see what’s next!
