Finally, I came across this very complex (or complicated?) double (triple?) portrait (self-portrait?) known as A Young Lad Smiling and (at?) Joseph Deutz in a Mirror - by Michael Sweerts (c. 1654)
Men Bathing by Michael Sweerts
Flemish painter who did some time in Rome Michael Sweerts loved to paint pictures of paintings, and to paint himself painting. It's wild that some Austrian had this painting in their house for a hundred years and just kind of kept it to themselves? Or maybe it's best to just enjoy a new old Sweerts, and to not focus on what early 20th century Austrians aren't telling us. Anyway, it's for sale at Christie's in Dec. 2023
