it is 10:30am and i’m thinking about michael and trust and parallels with leo!!!

in particular i’m thinking about michael and virginity and the fact that the reason he’s never slept with anyone is because he’s never trusted anyone enough to let them that close

and i’m thinking about how he’s had these trust issues ever since lucinda “betrayed” him

and i’m thinking about how leo never knew michael before that, only ever knew the version of him who’d built up a million walls

and how leo also have 10,000 trust issues himself and they manifest a little differently but they’re! still! there! leo is friendly!!! and he likes people!!! but it takes him ages to trust them!!!

and i’m just. once again thinking about how much the two of them don’t get along and how much of that is rooted in a) how similar they both are on a deep level and b) how many issues they have with themselves that manifest in issues with each other instead

Michael is so ridiculously touch starved that he almost immediately melts at any sort of physical affection.

Michael and Lucinda both really really loved languages, but it was sort of a thing they did together so after she fell, both of them sort of lost some of that passion they had for them. Learning new ones reminds them of the other and it leaves a sour taste in their mouths. Neither of them is ready to look at the other fondly quite yet.

Should he find himself slipping, Michael will physically move himself to 'pull' his empathy back into him. It's an old trick- one he’d learned on the playground when he didn’t want the other boys and girls to know his sadness. Back then, of course, he needed to reach both of his arms out and pull. They laughed at the funny boy grabbing onto air, but he’d rather that than the alternative.

Growing up, Michael was terrified of his empathy. He had to avoid large crowds because everyone’s emotions would come crashing into him and end up battling for dominance inside of his skull.

Michael’s learned to control it. He’s familiarized himself with dark emotions - felt someone else’s longing to die, to hurt themselves, or to feel a thing. It wasn’t him, but he’s felt it all. For a while he struggled with distinguishing his own emotions from others.

After being unable to face the great wave of his classmates emotions at The Institute, Michael received a tutor who taught him singlehandedly for several years.
