Friends, I bring you good tidings of GREATEST joy. Today is the 30th anniversary of the BBC airing the first episode of the Andrew Davies/Colin Firth/Jennifer Ehle Pride and Prejudice miniseries.
BUT even more exciting...they aired one episode per evening for six evenings, which means that the final episode aired on September 29, which is Michaelmas...which is of course the day that Mr. Bingley took possession of Netherfield. Isn't this the jolliest news?
I love being a nerd.
Updated: Y’all, I can’t read. It was one episode per week for six weeks meaning the final episode aired on October 29, which is not an especially auspicious P&P date.
"O Glorious Prince of the heavenly host, St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in the battle and in the terrible warfare that we are waging against the principalities and powers, against the rulers of this world of darkness, against the evil spirits..." -Pope Leo XIII, c.1890
Happy Michaelmas! And, of course, my birthday as well.
Thank you all for joining me on my 36th rotation around our sun, it's been quite a year, and no doubt more tumults in the year to come. But I have one gift for all of you to take with you.
On this day I came to be
Joining the world to breath and see
For though it has only been 36 years
I have been gifted with uncounted tears
To serve and love all of thee
The Archangels extend their wing
To protect all who can hear the light sing
For even in ages of terrible dark
Even the smallest can make their mark
Embracing their fellows in an adamant ring
So join me on this 29th of September
Let us make another year to remember
We will not accept merely to cope
Let us burn with abiding hope
For your heart is a bonfire, not an ember
I was working a perfectly beautiful French piece for All Soul’s/La Toussaint/Dusicky when I stumbled through some of Thérèse de Dillmont’s books she did for DMC. I wandered down the rabbit hole and now I’m working on a little side project.

These Coptic pieces are a bit deceptive. They don’t seem complex when you look at the pattern and then you get in the middle of it and next thing you know you are yanking stitches out because things aren’t going as expected.
I started with four strands of thread but wasn’t happy with the coverage so went back over with two more and continued working with six. I used four strands of the gold thread to do the accents. To me this is looking really messy but I’m trying to push through to learn the technique.
The last time I tried to do one of these Coptic pieces I adapted it to cross stitch and worked it Assissi style. I was really happy with it, but for some reason it never got finished and now I can’t figure out where I stored it.
I’m planning on using the little piece I’m working on now with the Michaelmas altar if I don’t give up in frustration.
I was happy to find a copy of the book scanned in on archive.org. It is making a world of difference as the scanned in pages are a higher quality than the ones above (that I was originally working with) and I can really zoom in.
Saint Michael the Archangel at Church of the Ascension in Chicago, IL
Holy Michael, Archangel, defend us in the day of battle; be our safeguard against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly host, by the power of God, thrust down to hell Satan and all wicked spirits who wander through the world for the ruin of souls. Amen.
O Prince most glorious, Michael the Archangel, keep us in remembrance: here and everywhere, always, entreat the Son of God for us. Amen.
