Social Climbers Weekly #36
1. Twitter’s 140 character exemptions come into effect from next week
A few months back Twitter announced a range of upcoming changes to the 140 character limit. These included: handles no longer being counted in replies, media attachments no longer count towards your 140 and more… Well now it’s being reported that the changes could well happen as soon as Monday 19th Sept. This means that we’ll soon be able to get more creative with Twitter copy as we’ll have around 23 characters extra per tweet (with a piece of content).

2. Twitter can now alert you when someone you follow starts live streaming
Much like Facebook Live’s notifications to those who have liked your Page, Twitter now sends out an alert to those who follow you when you go live. This is an opt in for users via a new notification button on its app that lets them subscribe to be alerted when someone goes Live. When receiving the alert, users can join the broadcast with one tap. The feature has launched worldwide and provides us with a really good way to 'hack' Twitter timelines.

3. Instagram is rolling out its tool to filter offensive comments to all users
As expected, the team at Instagram are rolling out a comment filter to all users in order to hide abuse on the app. It’s essentially a customisable keyword filter. The intention of the tool is to ‘keep Instagram a positive place and let users choose what’s acceptable’. The option can be switched on via the settings button on user profiles and then by tapping the ‘Comments’ button.

4. How Microbloggers leverage their influence through social media savvy [INFOGRAPHIC]
With the line between celeb and social media celeb pretty much erased, bloggers have gone on to become genuine influencers across numerous (if not all) industries. It’s not just those with huge followings either. More recently, brands have been turning to micro-influencers/bloggers with less than 100K followers in an effort to better target consumers. Media platform Bloglovin’ (which connects microbloggers to brands) looked into its users across many different channels/industries to see how/where they drive engagement.

5. How EE cornered the 16-24 male market with footie, influencers and video streaming
EE managed to fill Wembley stadium for a match that had nothing to do with a major football league. The match was the finale of the annual ‘EE Wembley Cup’, an eight part YouTube series produced by the brand in partnership with football vlogger Spencer FC. The show featured Spencer as he took part in a range of footie related challenges with fellow YouTuber Joe Weller in order to win their dream team to play alongside at Wembley.
