I Am the Queen (Original Work)

A/N: With Iron making it through Round 1 of the 100 Word Challenge, Round 2 was next. Here’s what I wrote. Results will be at the end of July. :D
The wine glass shattered on impact, the walls and carpet gulping its ruby contents.
“How could you?!” the wife pointed her shriek at her husband.
She rounded on me to mirror the same words as the rest: Home wrecker. My focus was on the cat, her cat, snuggling into my side, its fur delightfully soft under my palm.
“Probably softer than her hair,” I mused silently.
Lush lashes littered with tears, she stalked out of the house. Her husband — Samuel, I think — gifted me an apologetic smile, proving what I’ve always known: In every game, I am the Queen.

Scarlett hues glittered off the remaining nails. There wasn’t much time. The sun’s silencing gaze over the forest would soon cease. The now father-of-one had to nail this last board, this last line of defense, into the marred roof. He wouldn’t allow them to take his daughter too.
The townspeople had warned them when they arrived to sell their deceptively regular scrap metal — a chorus of knowing looks, shaking heads, whispers of the forest shadow. He should have listened.
They would come again, chittering and screeching. He should have never removed the iron bars from the windows.
