as i’m quite obsessed with my OCs, i’ll be talking a lot about my current wip, so i decided to introduce it with a little aesthetic.
I’m planning on revealing things as i go, likes names and descriptions and characters, because i think that’s more fun ;)
it’s a dark young adult fantasy with some West African-inspired elements, myths, and legends, as i am Nigerian and i love our mythology 🇳🇬
it follows the protagonist M who has been saving up for six years to leave the kingdom she was raised in. orphaned at 12, she was forced into contract killing by her adoptive guardian, and though she despises the job, she needs it.
she wants to escape, to start life over without the guilt and memories of her dead mother haunting her every thought. for eighteen years she’s been alive, but she has yet to truly live.
one day, she’s given a lucrative assignment that’s sure to help her reach her goal:
at the ball, kill the boy in the purple and gold mask.
it seems simple enough. until it all goes horribly wrong. though she succeeds in poisoning the boy—who turns out to be the sole heir of the kingdom—she is caught and cursed and her days of life timed.
she must find an antidote and stop the poison from reaching the prince’s heart, or else she too will perish—and her hopes of freedom, those which she’s worked for, killed for, will die with her.
but finding an antidote will not be easy.
with the aid of a charming thief, a runaway chieftess, and the prince himself, who is now stuck in her head (quite literally), M embarks on the tumultuous journey. she will not only enter the world she thought only to exist in her mother’s eerie tales, but also confront the very guilt and grief she’s been running away from. she will learn the truth of the world around her. the truth of herself.
and soon, she’ll realize that not only her freedom is at risk, but that of the entire kingdom.
basically, this is a story about a girl who hurts, a broken girl who learns to fight with her shards.
(and, of course, there’s some romance and best-friend tomfoolery sprinkled about every now and then. ;) )
it’s been described as Avatar: the Last Airbender meets Throne of Glass meets Six of Crows.
so...yeah. thanks for reading, see ya next time :)
