The thing I just love about slime molds of this genus are those narrow threads that prop up each long gelatinous tube, can you see them? 🔍 Though they sure are slimy, slime molds are actually not molds at all! Molds belong to the Kingdom Fungi, whereas slime molds belong to Kingdom Protista. Slime molds do superficially resemble fungi in a few different ways, most notably the production of spores, but they lack a cell wall and obtain nutrients differently than true fungi. There are several different types of slime molds. Some are giant single celled organisms with thousands of nuclei, while others are smaller single-celled amoeboids capable of aggregating into a superorganism when conditions become favorable. Want to find some for yourself? There’s a little over 1,000 different known species of slime mold today, and who knows how many more that have yet to be discovered! You can find them worldwide, usually in the dark and damp nooks and crannies of forest floors. 🌲" . . . .
