Winter Solstice | The Holly King vs The Oak King
‘Things have to get worse before they can get better.’ With each passing day of autumn we lose daylight. However, as the Winter Solstice arrives, the shortest day arrives, and we gain more daylight going forward. Ancient people, who spent more time outdoors, were acutely aware of this annual ebb and flow of daylight, the two poles of which are the Winter Solstice and its summer counterpart. For…

Happy Summer Solstice also known as Litha. (the longest day of the year and shorted Night of the year)! And Happy Mid-summer (June 24th)!
I know it might seem odd to to call June 24th Midsummer since it's only a few days after the official start of summer but remember, the Ancient Greeks only had two seasons. Before Autumn and spring were invented there was just Winter and Summer and that means around the solstice is actually the middle part of the warm season (Summer).
So enjoy the longest day of the year and welcome the return of Darkness!
Can't walk and the painting is upstairs so I'm sharing the IG post I did back in late June.
I wanted something about summer, especially mid-summer, hence the poppies and cornflowers.
This piece (A4 - regular sheet size) is for sale, 65€+shipping (worldwide)
[ID: A watercolour painting of a male roe deer head, with a yellow sun in between its antlers (not centered, more to the right). On its left antler is a yellowish butterfly (cabbage butterfly) and to the right of its right antler an orange brown and black butterfly (small tortoiseshell) is flying. There is ivy growing on this same right antler, and down to the bottom of the drawing. There are two circles, one near the left eye of the deer, containing poppies, and one near its nose on the right, containing cornflowers.]
Harvesting our mid-summer sowed carrots aka our test subjects. Ever seen a twinsy twisted carrot? Neither did we until now.
Note to self: mid-summer sowing should start end of June for these carrots to have enough growing time. Just place them in partial shade area to not burn in the summer heat.

Just a reminder for Litha/summer solstice
If you live in a hot area like I do (the desert) you do not have to spend today outside. You can enjoy the sun from inside if it’s safer for you to do so.
If you really just gotta be outside for the solstice, I totally feel you. But remember to use sunscreen, drink water, and maybe don’t set any fires during peak daylight times.
If you’re trans and out binding today, take frequent breaks and drink more water than you would without binding. Don’t wear your binder for more than 8 consecutive hours, no exceptions pls. It’s really more important to be safe. If you’re with good friends, they’ll understand if you need to stay inside for an hour while you take a binder break.
The solstice won’t be any fun for anyone if you risk getting heat stroke or heat exhaustion. You aren’t less of a witch for celebrating indoors, I promise.
