Chapter 3 - Pit of Darkness
Staring at the reflection of herself in the mirror, Kagome blinks and ponders on what kind of expression should she make at the moment?
Should she smile because she is somewhere safe? Well at least for now. The location of the café plus the illusion that hides it definitely helps cover her, but she cannot stay here forever.
Should she frown because she is bothering and involving other people with her problems? No matter how kind they are, this is something that she has to face. She cannot bring harm to more people.
Should she quit looking at herself and curl up on the floor, knowing that she is being chased? But what would that do exactly? Nothing.
Or should she just leave a note, leave this place…? But where?
Kagome knows that she definitely would not like the last two options, but she could not help but feel anxiety kick in every second the clock ticks.
~ ♡ ~
“I apologize that the only footwear we can offer you is these slippers,” Kagome remembers Miroku saying before he had asked Naraku to escort her to her new room through a path that the demon just ‘designed.’ Interestingly, not only is Naraku in charge of keeping the outward appearance of the café, but he is also maintaining the inner structure and passages of the café.
When the lady asks what and how, he says that she could think of him as a portal guard who manages the connections and paths of the café, at the same time, maintaining an appearance.
“The only illusion that I’ve been keeping is the look of an abandoned building, so all the wonderful designs for the guests are real. It is Mr. Miroku who owns the place after all,” she remembers his clarification, which somehow makes her question Miroku’s identity.
But other than that, giving the dark-haired demon’s back a quizzical look now and then, Kagome could not help but think on what kind of demon Naraku is. However, those thoughts soon fade as entering one of Naraku’s ‘portals’ is similar to entering a hall with a lot of doors through more doors. Kagome lets her eyes roam around the place, worry filling her that she may get lost in this labyrinth of a café.
The red-eyed who is holding her shoes, senses her fear and assures her that since she is new, it is normal to feel this way but they will guide her.
Kagome, who is in a daze, trying to balance all the information and all the new paths before her, is still worried in spite of the demon’s assurance. Though the feeling is now mixed with curiosity.
Towards the end of perhaps the fourth hall if she did not lose count, a chocolate brown door with a silver knob stands. Naraku makes way for her and smiles, “This will be your room from now on, Lady Kagome.”
She hesitates to step forward, looking back at the other doors with different designs. Before entering, she makes it a must to take in all the information she can. From nine doors in this hall, this is the only door with a brown color.
“Is anything wrong?”
“Uhm… is it me or are the door designs, personalized?” For someone who will be staying on another place, she thinks that she should have kept her mouth shut, but her curiosity got the better of her.
Naraku smiles again at her. “Good observation. To answer your question, yes. Whoever occupies the room gets to choose what kind of design their door would be. Though I do control the portals, Mr. Miroku advised that instead of having names and labels on doors, it would be better to have different designs in case a customer manages to sneak in.”
Kagome nods, accepting the explanation. She feels that this whole place is well-crafted and well-thought of. Somehow, she could not help but think of it as an amazing place.
After Naraku brings her to that spare room that will now be hers as per Miroku, he settles her shoes on a table and says that she will have to wait for a bit because they will be opening and working soon. Before he leaves her, he makes sure to hand her the key to the room.
The moment he shuts the door, the lady suddenly realizes that she is alone as if it bothered her before. The room though designed for comfort and security, makes her feel so small. Its size is only a fraction of the wholeness of the café but being alone makes her feel so vulnerable.
Trying to stop her legs from collapsing on her, she rushes to the comfort room.
~ ♡ ~
“What do I do?” she asks again, this time letting her lips make the words. She still could not feel settled at all.
Now, in a sudden, one more emotion mixes with her already wild stream of feelings – guilt.
The hosts of the café have agreed to take her in, giving her the best treatment and aid, and here she is, still drowning in her messed up self. Why is she so weak?
Her eyebrows meet in frustration as she decides to close her eyes to try and calm her senses, but it still fails to do so. Kagome opens her gray eyes again, turns on the faucet, and uses her hands to splash the cold water on her face.
Slapping her palms to her wet cheeks, she looks back at herself in the mirror. “You cannot cry, Kagome Higurashi.”
Getting a firmer grip on her emotions and thoughts and faking the fire in her eyes, Kagome breathes out and grabs a towel hanging near the sink. Stomach in, chest out, butt out, chin up. Fake it ‘til you make it.
She turns the knob and opens the door back to her room, only to have all of her hardwork-born control spill out.
“Kyaaaah!”
“Ugh stop kyaah-ing you wench! How many times do you scream in a day?” Inuyasha whines, eyes flinching as he rubs a thumb to one of his ‘hurt’ ears. He scowls as his eyes drop on her.
“Wh-what are you doing here?!” Kagome almost feels bad for asking that when she is the one who should not be staying there, but she is totally not ready to see him in ‘her room.’
Is she so messed up and pre-occupied that even the faintest sounds do not alarm her anymore?
Inuyasha observes her with all his senses. His golden orbs take in some water dripping from her cheeks and chin, the form of her hair that is now free, the rise and fall of her chest, and her hands gripping on a white towel. Now having more time, he sees the whole of her standing before him, a bit curious about how she could have ran a while ago in such long dress.
For a second there, he thinks of her as someone amazing to be able to escape, but of course, he would not admit that even to himself.
This time, his ears pick up, he hears her controlled yet ragged breathe that matches her uneven heartbeat.
Inuyasha sniffs and frowns. The heavy smell of vanilla butterscotch envelops this woman and her captors that his great sense of smell is having a hard time to decipher a lot of things. And he absolutely hates not knowing things.
After all, as a dog demon, his sharped senses are there to help him assess situations and people.
As much as he hates to admit it, Sesshomaru is right. Despite being unable to interpret, he could not pick up a sign of danger from this woman. Yet, why is her presence disturbing every bit of him?
“Strip.”
“Excuse me!?”
Inuyasha raises a dark brow, clearing his throat to hide his shock. That came out wrong. What is wrong with him? Ever since this woman came hours ago, he has been neglecting all the Inuyasha-esque moves and words. And that is another thing that is bothering him.
It has only been a few hours and he has broken several rules and patterns of himself, what more could her living with them bring? He just might lose himself with her near him.
That statement in itself is already bewildering. Just why would he lose himself because of her?
Irritating.
What’s more is that Miroku seems to be having fun on relying on him on tasks relating to her. He wanted to get more of the café owner’s thoughts, but since it is almost opening time, Miroku is quick to dodge all his queries. Tch. Might as well just get this over with.
“Here,” he tosses a pile of clothes to her, to which she manages to catch though evidently surprised. “Some clothes you can change into.”
The dog demon feels good enough to be able to save himself from the embarrassment, but he has to get out of this room. Now.
Turning to his back, Inuyasha makes way for the door. Quickly.
“Inuyasha?”
Shit. He stops, almost buzzed by his own name coming from her lips. But he does not look back.
Kagome gathers all her courage for that mention of his name but now that she has his attention and he is not screaming and scowling at her, she is not so sure what to tell him. She hugs the clothes given to her as she stares at his broad back.
“Thank you for bringing me clothes.”
“Yeah, yeah, whatever.”
“And thank you for earlier. I really owe you a lot,” the words flow as she looks down, “I owe you my life.”
Then silence fills the room. Kagome has thanked this guy earlier and also argued with him lots for the past hours of her interaction with him. But right now, she really feels the need for gratitude.
Right now, Kagome is still confused and lost though she has found this place. Truthfully, she is not even sure if she should be here. But the fact that she is away from harm, from him, she really feels relieved and she does not even realize that until now that she has given him a proper thank you.
“I’m sorry for being a burden and me staying here… I know that it’s a bother, but I’m really thankful for the help… It hasn’t even been a day, but you people have been very kind,” as she continues to speak, she does not realize that her words come out faster and stronger and that her figure starts to shake.
“If… If not for you, I would… I’d probably… He’d probably…” Kagome could not find her words. She continues to look at the ground as she feels her shoulders quiver and her arms hug the clothes that Inuyasha handed earlier tighter and tighter.
Her eyes begin to water as she slowly feels her knees shake.
Who is she kidding? She could not even make herself believe that she is not frightened. Not with that quivering self, definitely not.
“Wench?”
Why does she have to act so tough?
She is only some girl with no one to rely on. Whatever she has achieved means nothing. All she has is herself.
“Hey…”
She is alone.
And right now, he is after her. He is looking for her. No matter where she hides, he will not stop. He will find her. And–
“Kagome!”
His call pulls her out from her drowning thoughts. She looks up to see golden eyes looking at her, but her tears are blurring her vision.
“Y-yes?” she blinks as the tears finally fall and she sees him clearer. He notices their close distance as he looks at her.
Inuyasha sighs, probably from relief or annoyance, she could not tell. But seeing his expression soften makes her wonder how he always sported scowls when he is capable of giving such friendlier look.
“Keh. Looks like you’re good,” a pause, “I’m going,” he says as he closes his eyes trying to mask his panic earlier. Just moments ago her eyes looked blank all of a sudden and she started trembling. He has no idea what happened and who the ‘he’ she is talking about though.
Sure, seeing and dealing with women crying is a situation that is never his forte, but seeing her look like that… How annoying.
The demon opens his eyes and is welcomed by a smiling Kagome who is now staring at him. Was she this close all this time?
He widens his eyes but manages to narrow them into a quizzical look. “What are you looking at?”
The scared woman that she was a while ago is nowhere to be seen as right now, all he could see is a lady with lips curling up on her face and a pair of bright gray eyes staring at him.
“You finally called me by my name.”
“Keh.” He exits the room.
Kagome, left alone again, looks at the clothes handed to her, feeling the warmth of his hands on her shoulders just moments ago.
Just how many times has he saved her in the few hours that they have met?
Inuyasha saved her not only from the trouble with the thugs but also from her inner turmoil. Like some angel calling her out from her pit of darkness. Maybe Inuyasha is not really a bad demon.
She smiles, recharged. “Higurashi, banzai!”
~ ♡ ~
Inuyasha comes to the main hall and is welcomed by squeals and screams.
“It’s Inuyasha-sama!”
“Inuyasha-sama is here!”
“Ah always so gorgeous!”
The man rolls his eyes, the trademark scowl getting back to his features.
While empty just moments ago, the café is once again filled with customers, and as much as he hates tolerating all these kyaah-ing, he knows that he has a job to do.
“Table number six for you, Inuyasha. It’s the triplets,” Miroku, who is currently at the reception table tells him. He seems pretty busy dealing with papers.
“Yeah, that annoying harmony of screams can only come from them,” he replies, knowing full well the regular trio.
Miroku chuckles as he hands Inuyasha an hourglass, “I don’t mind taking away those three from you, but they specifically requested for you today. They said they have wonderful stories to tell you. An hour for each lady.”
“Great, three hours of high-pitch nonsense.” If only he did not have to do this job to pay back what he owes Miroku, Inuyasha would never be in such a job.
“You seem to be in a real bad mood. Ears too sensitive today?” Of course, Inuyasha could catch that ‘creativity’ that Miroku is playing.
“Keh.”
The manager only smiles as he watches the dog demon walk to the table before getting back to his work.
After placing the hourglass atop the table, Inuyasha ungracefully takes a seat on the sofa, arms resting on the backrest.
“Didn’t I tell you to stop screaming when ya’re here?”
Three women in colorful dresses stare at him with blushing faces and glossy lips agape. Just a few seconds of silence pass before they start screaming again much to Inuyasha’s welcoming comment.
“Ara, Inuyasha-sama is really cute when he is rejecting us!”
“I know, I know! Do it more!”
“But for now, Inuyasha-sama, time to listen to our story for you today!”
Inuyasha rolls his eyes. As a host for Miroku’s café, he has to listen to the customers and talk with them while drinking or eating with them.
Unfortunately for Inuyasha some of the things that can fill his annoyance meter include nonsense concerns and stories, screaming, and drama – and most customers bring these in their time in the café.
At first, he tried to follow Miroku’s instructions but in the first few minutes of his first ever service, he already snapped at a girl who complained about getting her heart broken because she could not confess to the guy she liked and eventually he got himself a girlfriend.
“Stop yapping, do you think I really care about coward shit like that? You should have said something before crying here.” He remembers his exact words. He was about to get a hit from Miroku, but somehow his raw honesty won the heart of that woman and the other girls in the café who overheard his explosion.
If you ask him, entertaining is not a field of expertise and he will never get used to it, but unintentionally, his attitude is quite popular with the ladies. Weirdos.
Soon, (thanks to Miroku) he got branded as the Tsundere Prince – a title that still makes him cringe even now.
Everything in his job is annoying. But he only reacts to what is being thrown at him. Inuyasha would never initiate anything that will only add up to his problems.
Only Kagome is the exception by far.
His eye twitches. As the previous events in her room playback on his mind, he starts to get annoyed again. Her shaking figure, her tears, her smile, her gray eyes… Why can’t I just ignore her?
Why indeed? Dealing with people’s feelings, for him, is not a delicate matter at all. He would say what he wants. He would do what he wants. But he would never meddle. People need to deal with their own shit. So, why?
Her face reappears in his head, from the moment he met her when he heard men threatening her. From that instant when she told him to leave, why did he ask her to ask him for help?
“Are you listening, Inuyasha-sama?”
“Damn it! Just forget about her!”
Realizing his words, he looks at the triplets who had bewildered expressions on their faces. Did he just say that out loud…?
“KYAAH Inuyasha-sama is right! Our new landlady is really annoying! We just have to forget about her!”
“Right?! Staying there only became stressful when she came!”
“And you know what, she has this really grumpy—"
Inuyasha tries to compose himself letting their voices drown out. For now, he must endure all these. Anywhere is better for now, as long as it is nowhere near Kagome. That is what he thought.
But while she is not near him, why is she still attached to his mind?
“How annoying,” he sighs.
“Yes, she is so annoying!”
“Do you think we should leave?”
“Or maybe we should confront her next time?”

Chapter 2 here
Waah I’m sorry this chapter took too long! Life was too busy lately ;A; But I’m glad I finally got to upload it.
For those who have a hard time imagining Naraku’s role, you can think of it as the arc system in D.Gray-Man. A bit similar with that plus manipulating barriers as illussions.
I know that I’m on chapter 3 but it’s only been a few hours in the fic world haha but I really want to take the time with these characters. I don’t want this to be fast-paced at all. And I want to make this a real multi-fic.
I also want to honor Kagome's emotions. I was re-reading the manga, and somehow, I feel like her emotions when she was transported to the feudal era is a bit lighter (which is admirable though if you think about it) and she only broke down when she came back to her family. So I want her to have more emotions in a stressful situation (LOL) because it is totally normal to feel these things! Strong people feel weak too!

Chapter 2 - Demons in (a piece of) heaven
Kagome could feel herself laughing inside her mind, like the hours before the present condition she is now is some kind of a big joke the gods played especially for her.
“Not a good joke, Kami. Not a good joke.”
Who would have thought that just some moments ago, she was running to spare her life from three men, a knife almost got her skin dripping with blood, and a man whom she once called an angel but was actually a demon, came and saved her? Just to top off the whole comedy scenario that was written specifically for her, some other guy comes and asks her to be the woman who would bear his child.
Before she could even take offence or feel creeped out by the proposal, the next thing she knows, said guy gets hit on the head by his silver-haired companion. She gets invited inside the abandoned building which in a snap, is actually like a mini version of a palace. And finally, here she is, trying to replay everything in her mind.
That was the best description Kagome could think of and if that sounds absurd, she knows well that she tried to make sense of everything. She deserves a pat on the back for staying sane.
If she knew that life would be this crazy at this age, Kagome wished that she was transported back to the feudal era fighting some monsters with sacred arrows. In such setting, everything could be absurd to the point that she would get immune to it, at least that is what she thinks.
With a wink from the short-haired man and a “We’ll be back. For now, just rest, my lady,” Kagome is left inside, with an emptied glass after she quenched the burning of her throat a few moments ago.
Seated on a white sofa, with golden piping and linings, surrounded by scarlet-hued cotton pillows, with different brands of wine and a tower of glasses presented on a table near her, the young lady can only be still and keep herself company amidst the previous scenarios.
While she is mustering up all the calm left in her exhausted body to be able to think straightly, her gray eyes could not stop from taking in the beauty of the place that has accepted her right now – from its red carpeted floors to its white walls, to the glass-beaded chandeliers that are hung.
Red. White. Gold. Oddly, she is reminded of her savior a while ago who sported similar colors – a red top, silver hair, and golden eyes. Wherever he is now, Kagome will not deny how his entrance and appearance is etched on her memory.
But now is not the time to be thinking about him. With the absence of a mirror near her, she starts to look at herself from her chest to her arms, up to her uncoated feet.
Some silky ribbons embedded on her green dress are now disarrayed. The smooth cloth that hugged her figure so fully now looks like some crumpled green lump. Her dark curly hair, while not damp anymore because of the place’s air condition, is nowhere to be labelled as ‘neat’ when she can feel some of her locks tickle the skin exposed on her back. The marathon with the muscular men earlier may have taken some or most of the hair ornaments that once decorated her head.
While she is not soaked from her sweat anymore, she feels sticky all over her neck, arms, and legs, especially her feet that feel sore, numb, and painful all at the same time. If there is a word for such a feeling, Kagome has no idea.
After pitying her current state (though thankful that the hardest parts are over) her eyes land on the classic paintings that graced the walls, the candles that are lit on the sides, and the baskets of fruits centering the numbers of wooden tables. Kagome has yet to see the whole place, but from where her vision could take her, the place is too huge for just two guys.
In fact, there are far too many cushioned seats, unless both guys were seat freaks, which she doubts is the real case.
“Is it a bar…” before the tone of her question could even bend on the last syllable, she starts, “or some kind of restaurant?” Kagome could not help but wonder. The place looks too fancy to be a bar. While it could pass as a restaurant, the choice of seats is not ideal.
She is not new to the lifestyle of the rich, given her boss is a—she softly gasps, caught in between her breath. Now is not really the time to be reminded of her boss… Kagome bites her lip, too late that the memory already surfaced. She tries her best to shrug the weighing thoughts off and she shakes her head and close her eyes.
Feeling more composed, she takes a deep breath and once again opens her eyes to the sight before her.
Skipping back to her previous line of thought, this is definitely her first to step in a place that looked so fancy like some piece of heaven on earth, in the middle of the darkness of the city.
“What… is this place exactly?” she continues to look up, taking note of the intricate patterns even on the ceilings. The place is too well-thought and well-designed to be a shady kind of place too.
“It’s a host club café,” a man answers her, which almost jolts her upon hearing such silky voice. Without seeing the face of the person, Kagome is positive that this person is different from the two men she met earlier.
Kagome acknowledges the presence of a beautiful man with dark silky ebony hair. He has blood-red eyes that welcome her presence as well. Just like the couple of guys that Kagome interacted, this one is also wearing a suit, except that his was dark gray matched with a darker shade of an inner dress shirt. He bows, “Sorry to startle you. I just wanted to answer the query.”
The 23-year-old nods and waves her hands to dismiss the idea that he had to be apologetic. So it was not only the two men earlier, she notes, now more curious to what the place really is.
“A host club café, you say?”
Kagome has heard of host clubs, but the idea of entering one has never crossed her mind even for simple research purposes or just ‘to try it out.’
Men who entertain women? Drink with guests? These ideas float on her mind, but she still cannot fully grasp what a host club really is.
He nods, and hands her a towel, “Yes. Our manager will be here in a bit to explain everything in detail.”
Kagome bows once again as thanks to the man before her. As if on cue, the man with a short hair comes back with a basin of water on hand.
“My lady, sorry to make you wait. Here, I warmed this up to soak your feet,” the guy kneels just before her to place the basin on the carpeted floor. She whispers another word of gratitude as she lets her feet touch the water.
She flinches at first, suddenly feeling the pain from her decision of running on the streets with barefoot. But letting the water surround her skin, she breathes, glad that no signs of open wounds graced her feet.
Right now, Kagome feels so relieved that she did not step on any sharp object earlier, fearful of what injury she may have gotten.
The dark-haired lady sighs feeling relaxed as her feet touch the inner smoothness of the basin, surrounded by the warmth of the water. The temperature also soothes the pain her legs have been enduring. She stares down at the now-murky water, hoping that she is not in any way infected with all that dirt.
Satisfied, the man kneeling smiles at her.
“If you will excuse me,” the short-haired man says slowly, stands up, and turns his back on her.
On close inspection, Kagome notices that the man’s hair was tied really small and low. It almost amazes her that he is able to tie such small amount and short length of hair. She also sees the piercings on his left ear.
He claps, “Everyone, we have a guest to greet!”
The two men exchange some looks as a door appears between the paintings that Kagome is admiring earlier. If the door materializing out of thin air did not surprise her anymore, she is pretty sure that the events earlier numbed some of her senses.
The door looks like any other regular door, carved in wood with a golden knob. It does have a golden plaque in the middle, but it was too far away for Kagome to read.
As the door opens, two more breath-taking men come out – one with significantly straight silver hair and purple markings on his face and another with long black hair tied in a high pony tail. The silver-haired man is wearing a white suit, with piercing golden eyes. While the dark-haired one is in a brown suit, to which the color makes his azure eyes stand out.
“Isn’t it a bit too early to call us, Miroku?” pony-tail guy asks, as he yawns, fangs showing. He scratches on his chest, exposed with the lack of buttons of his shirt.
The other man stays silent though, seemingly uninterested.
“Let’s just wait for—” “Hey, Miroku, I finally found the wench’s shoes. Happy?”
Kagome almost giggles at man called Miroku’s rolling eyes because it seems that Mr. Sensitive ears likes to interrupt people who are speaking.
“Alright! Everyone’s here, my lady,” that catches a bit of Kagome off guard. Right before her, there were five men in formal wear, each having his own appeal. Indeed, this was a host club. Just a while ago, she is admiring her savior’s features, but right now (though she is not saying that his appearance downgraded) the place is exuding in beauty. She suddenly feels out of place, especially with her current appearance.
“Let me introduce everyone and myself. I am Miroku, the manager of this place,” he points at himself and winks at her.
He points his hand to the black-haired man that accompanied her earlier, “This is Naraku.”
“A pleasure,” he says, giving a short bow.
“He is in charge of keeping the café’s illusion barrier.”
Naraku clears his throat then replies, “I would prefer to call it aesthetics, Mr. Miroku.”
Miroku rolls his eyes, then gestures his hands to the man in a pony-tail, “This is Koga of the wolf tribe,” he introduces as the man of topic says a “Yo” with a smirk.
“Next to go Koga is Sesshomaru,” Miroku continues, as Kagome looks at the man in a white suit, who seems to have an unreadable expression. She almost waits for a brief introduction like with the others, but the cold sweat visible from the talkative man is enough reason for her to not keep her hopes up.
“And of course,” the manager regains his cool and looks at the last unnamed guy in the room, “This is Inuyasha, you must know him already.”
“Keh,” he grunts, with a pair of silver high heels that is Kagome’s, hanging on his clawed fingers.
Kagome makes it a note to react politely to the introduction. Finding strength return to her legs, she stands, feet still in the basin, as she bows. “I am Kagome, nice to meet you.”
Fearing that her weight may crush or break the container, she immediately takes back her seat.
“I really… thank you for the hospitality and for taking care of me,” she manages to continue.
Inuyasha raises a dark brow on her. “At least this woman knows how to thank other people, huh.”
The hanyou taps his fingers in an impatient manner. What is Miroku thinking, bringing this woman to their place and introducing everyone like they are having family introductions?
Heck, why is she in their café in the first place?! And why did he ask him to go and retrieve her shoes like he is some kind of dog?
Inuyasha has a lot of questions right now that need to be answered once Miroku is done with his shenanigans. But right now, everything is irritating every inch of his body, especially that woman.
There really is something about her that is making him feel so unsettled. He needs to be away from her right now.
Kagome’s left brow twitches, narrowing her gray eyes at Inuyasha, “As far as I can recall, I did thank you earlier, Mr. Sensitive ears.”
At first, there is silence… but a burst of roaring laughter then fills the room and the crowd finds out that it is Koga, who is emitting such laughter, “Hah, don’t tell me ya are whining about your dog ears to this pretty lady, hahaha! Can’t believe ranting to us about that everyday is not enough.” Miroku, on the other hand, is trying his best to suppress his own.
Inuyasha is supposed to ignore him until Koga started saying, “I think I like her already.”
“Well your wolf ears must be getting rusty then to not hear that you are not even part of our conversation.”
Man named Koga returns an irritated smirk, ready to land a smack on the half-demon, “Did ya say something, mutt?”
“Ya still didn’t hear? Want me to spell it out to your dull wolf ears?” Inuyasha says, also readying his fists.
Kagome looks at the dog demon and the wolf demon back and forth, like watching an intense ping pong match.
Miroku comes in between the two demons to clear the building tension, “Now, now you guys, pup fights are over at this hour.”
“PUP FIGHTS!?” unison uproars from both that Miroku immediately dismisses as something like a normal scenario at the place, “So as I was saying, Lady Kagome,” the mention of her name gets her attention once again.
“Together with Inuyasha, Koga, Sesshomaru, and Naraku, we are running this host club. However, it only opens at night at 10:00. Seeing the illusion vanish earlier than expected like what happened just a while ago,” Miroku emphasizes on the words and gives Naraku a look, to which the latter just smiles back “was an accident.”
“My vision for the club is to treat women – god-sent creatures – the way they deserve to be treated. Thus, this club was born,” he continues, eyes sparkling.
“However, just to avoid the actions that can be caused by the passionate emotions that may arise from our customers, we decided to only open on selected hours every evening and to hide and make our place inaccessible outside these hours. This also serves as a resting period for our staff.”
Miroku makes a dramatic pose by placing the back of his hand to his forehead, tears flowing, “As much as it pains me to live with men, I must endure for the sake of my beloved angels.”
Kagome nods reluctantly, not finding the right words to reply not only to Miroku’s drama but everything else said and done. Why are they telling her all of these?
“Uhm… Miroku-san… I appreciate everything that you have done for me and the help I received. But I don’t think it’s necessary to have you feed me with all the details. I’ll be leaving this place as soon as I can,” Kagome starts searching for the best words for the situation. She is indeed grateful, but right now, she could not possibly be a burden to them. She has no idea where to go yet or what next step to fulfill. She even has no next step yet!
However, if there is one thing that she knows, it is that she cannot ask for more help from these people.
“I promise to come back and pay back what I can,” she adds.
Miroku frowns and approaches her. “Will you at least let me be the father of your chil—” for the second time, he gets a smack from Inuyasha.
“A-as I was saying,” he starts as he recovers from the hit, “Lady Kagome, I do not think it would be a wise decision to leave. Hearing the story from Inuyasha, men were after you. I simply cannot let a beautiful lass like you be subject to more threat in this world! Why are they even after you?”
Kagome swallows hard at the reality being narrated to her and at the question she refuses to answer. She looks down, gazing at her hands on her lap. She cannot involve more people.
Miroku, who notices the tension on her shoulders, speaks, “So you can stay here with us.” He smiles as if what he just said is the most normal suggestion in the world.
“What!?” This is not Kagome’s reaction verbally (mentally yes though). It is Inuyasha’s.
“Yes, I’m pretty sure you heard it right, Inuyasha.”
“What are fuck are you talking about Miroku!?”
The manager completely ignores Inuyasha and inches nearer Kagome. He holds her hands, “Do not worry. I am not a demon like all of them. As the only human male in this café, I will take care of you.”
Kagome, in her mind, knows that it is probably Miroku that she has to be the wariest of even if he is the only human in there. She fakes a smile though.
“Miroku! Don’t be insane!” Inuyasha is still barking. Kagome could only stare. He really does not want her here, does he?
“Hey mutt, way to go for being rude to a lady. Are ya really a host, huh?!” Koga counters, noticing the expression on Kagome’s face that she is not even aware that she is making.
“Shut up, you wolf.”
Inuyasha had no real comebacks. After all, the place is owned by Miroku and he is the one with problems. But he just knows that being near her would not be good for him.
“Since when did women, scare you?”
Kagome is unsure at first but noticing Miroku’s hand that is still holding hers grow cold, she confirms that the room’s temperature did go down all of a sudden. Blinking, she follows the gazes of the four men. They are all looking at the silver-haired man named Sesshomaru, if her memory is not failing her.
The said man is actually sitting on one of the sofas, legs crossed, drinking from a cup. While the conversations and exchange are happening earlier, Kagome had no chance to know how and when he got in such… graceful position.
“What do you mean, scare me?” Inuyasha asks straightly, though evidently taken aback by the question.
Sesshomaru settles his cup on the saucer on the table. “Have your demon senses weakened? No gun powders, illegal narcotics, blood, or any other scent of crime is enveloping this woman.”
As soon as he makes his point, he stands from his seat and leaves everyone staring at his back.
Why do I get the feeling that Sesshomaru is the manager and not Miroku? Kagome sweatdrops.
“The older mutt is right though,” Koga breaks the silence that came after.
“Fufufu. Maybe you shouldn’t call him that, Koga-kun,” Naraku says smiling. Sesshomaru is never fond of nicknames.
“Keh. Whatever,” it is Inuyasha’s turn to leave. Stupid Sesshomaru.
Miroku sighs and faces Kagome. “I apologize about that. We will not force you to tell us what happened. But I think all of us here agree that we just can’t let you go out again. You are more than welcome to stay here, Lady Kagome.”
Inuyasha doesn’t agree though, Kagome thinks back on his words. But seeing Miroku’s assuring smile, all she can do is nod.
“Thank you very much.”
Koga narrows his eyes, “You can let go of her hand now, though.”
Miroku smiles back, “Sorry, habits.”
Kagome stares at the three men before her, the opened door that Sesshomaru left to, and her shoes that Inuyasha left. Will living with them really be her life now?

Chapter 1 - Angel
In an emerald-hued dress that fitted her way too perfectly, unfortunately, matched with a pair of silver high heels and purse, she would seem to belong in a glamorous and delightful world. Except that right now, reality is far too different.
If Kagome Higurashi at the age 23 ever heard someone call her a coward, she would not even bat an eyelash at said person as their opinion has no significance when it clearly knows nothing on the fears she has conquered by relying on no one but herself. Secondly, said person does not deserve even an inch of her attention – even if that unit of measurement is not appropriate.
But in the middle of dark unfamiliar streets and alleyways, with three muscular men in suits – make that three angry muscular men in suits who smell good after she accidentally used her favorite body spray instead of her pepper spray – running after her, now must be the perfect time to call her one.
“A running coward, that’s who you are right now, Kagome,” she painfully reminds herself under her breath. She regrets not taking those free taekwondo lessons by her grandfather back then even if she had trust issues with him.
“Come here, you piece of shit! I don’t care if you’re a woman, I will beat you to a pulp!” roars one of the three, whom she would label as muscular man #1. Kagome does not like him already, not because he is chasing her and cursing, but clearly, someone who does not like vanilla butterscotch scent is someone that cannot be trusted. She ponders why even if it is untimely as she is in the middle of running away, she still has the guts to have such thoughts.
Kagome swallows hard, abandoning her unfitting train of thought and ignoring not only the sexist remark but also the shaking of her knees, letting adrenaline take over every part of her body to dash for her life. She thanks her eyes and brain for choosing a dress that is still comfortable for her to be able to run like this.
She continues her rapid footsteps, feeling the wind hit her warming sweat-coated skin, stormy-gray eyes trying its best to focus on the way amidst the identical gray walls of the constricted backstreet.
Each step adds weight to her feet, feeling the numbing pain hammering inside her moving legs. Despite this, Kagome manages to think straight before she runs out of breath from all the fleeing.
“Think, Kagome. Think.”
With at least a five-meter advantage, the woman suddenly halts and looks back, long hair flipping, which catches the three men off guard initially, who abruptly stop on their tracks.
“Finally decided to be obedient like a good girl?” the man whom she mentally labels as muscular man #2 mocks with a triumphant smirk, which almost makes Kagome frown if she is not mustering her best to appear unfazed by the situation.
Trying to control the rapid rise and fall of her chest, Kagome glares at the men who are inching slowly.
As slowly as their approach, she subtly loosens her high heels with small unnoticeable toe-wiggling and relieves herself off them in a split second. Her next movements happen in a flash, too fast for the men to dodge the pair of high heels flying to their faces.
No wonder they were called women’s weapons, Kagome notes, amazed, upon hearing the loud ‘bony’ sound of the high heels hitting skulls and different curses leaving gums. Though she planned that, she has no idea if it would work as she hoped.
This time ignoring the feeling of the rough cemented path, the barefoot Kagome starts running again as if the previous events are not really tiring.
Devastatingly, not only is she starting to run out of breath but also out of tricks.
Where should she go? Everything seems to be a whole mass of gray maze, sloppily constructed behind the dark streets. This is the part of the city that she has never been in. She continues to look for clues, for landmarks, anything that can just guide her.
Hearing a couple of steps behind her again, she is reminded that there are three men chasing her, leaving the other two victimized by her deadly shoes.
As much as she managed to land a successful hit to the two, one is still unharmed, back to his business of capturing her. He still smells good though, she is sure.
“What to do? Someone h—no! No one is here,” Kagome grimaces, almost saying the taboo h-word.
“You’re dead!” the thundering declaration – not just a threat – brings her back from her drowning thoughts. Indeed she meets a dead end. There before her is an abandoned establishment with rusty doors, blackened and dusty windows, nowhere else to go and escape to; the very image of game over spelled for her in bold capital letters.
Muscular man #3 watches her figure, lips sliding upwards despite the ragged breathing.
Kagome faces him with narrowing eyes, refusing to give up but uncertain on what to do next. Instinctively, her dirtied feet inch backwards.
“You did not have to go through this if you cooperated, right good girl?” The nickname makes her cringe.
To add more to Kagome’s horror, the other muscular men soon came behind, faces red for two reasons 1) the shoe hit marks and bruises and 2) their fumes of anger. A good news and a bad news, respectively.
“I will not go back!” she finds courage though caged by the trio.
The three men laugh manically, looking down at Kagome like a poor trapped rabbit.
The lady clenches her fists out of frustration. She has nothing, no one here. She is all by herself. What can she do?
She closes her eyes out of desperation. Think. Brain, come up with something.
“Could you guys shut it over there? Ears are pretty sensitive.”
All eyes turn above including her newly opened ones, just at the top of the abandoned building right behind Kagome, believing there to be the source of the male voice.
“What the?”
“Show yourself brat! We got no time for shit, you hear—oof!” just before muscular man #3 finishes his supposed threat, said man from above lands a foot square on his face.
“Yeah I hear ya, didn’t I tell you to shut it?” man says, with an annoyed tone, landing gracefully, foot on top of the thug’s face.
Kagome once rejected the idea of angels existing, probably because she has yet to see one. But right now, she is a bit convinced that they exist, except that they did not possess fluffy white wings, curly blonde hair, and a silky voice like some member of a choir from above.
Instead, they have fluffy dog ears, long silver hair, and a husky voice coming from a fanged mouth. They are not wearing white and bright tunics, but they are wearing a red dress shirt in a dark suit.
If one of the descriptions in the beliefs and legends are true, maybe it is that they are barefoot.
“Who the fuck are you!?” muscular man #2 yells, getting a glare of gold from the ‘angel.’
“Look here buddy, I’m in a bad mood right now because you guys broke my much-needed sleep,” he lifts his left hand, clasps it as the sound of knuckles cracking fill the air.
“Keh. If I were you, I’d start running with my tail between my legs,” he says though he has no tail at his back.
“You son of a—!” for the second time one of the men is interrupted, but this time with a fist on the face.
The man in a suit furrows his dark eyebrows, evidently frustrated with all the screaming as he touches his ear with his claws.
Kagome can only watch in awe as not even 30 seconds has passed but her ‘angel’ has somehow taken two men down already. Without realizing, two strong hands grip on her face, painfully holding on to her cheeks.
Before she could even struggle to try and break free, a blade makes its way near just on her eye level, dangerously glinting.
“There, there. Be the good girl that you are and you should be,” comes the chilling voice that made her knees weaker than they already are.
“Hey hanyou! If I were you I’d leave the fuck out of here with my tail between my legs,” remaining muscular man bounces his earlier threats.
The man called a hanyou stares back.
“All it takes is one move, girl. Your choice,” this time, the voice in a whisper is directed to her.
Kagome stares at the reflection of her eyes on the blade near her. She is indeed a coward if she continues to drag someone else into this. No matter how strong he is, right now, she only has herself, only she can save herself.
“I’ll come with you,” the four words come out so heavily, so disgustingly. She hates this, the feeling of being powerless, being unable to do anything when everything unfolding is just wrong.
Muscular man smirks, “I knew you would be obedient soon.”
“As for you hanyou, you can go now and we can all pretend that none of these ever happened.”
The called man’s gold eyes fall on Kagome, noticing her tensed shoulders and mouth quivering. But what really gets him is the way her gray eyes look sharp, unfazed, despite the evident fears her body is emitting.
He is the kind of man who hates trouble. He has known that for the centuries he has lived as himself. So he definitely will not get himself in any form of hassle that will only be a bother and be unnecessary for him. After all, the world has problems, but he has his own problems to deal with.
So he definitely will not help her. The woman knows how to deal with her problems if she responded that way. She knows her life.
“Hey wench, ya got something to say?”
He almost curses, what the hell was he doing? Where did that come from?
The gray eyes that he has been carefully watching no matter how many times he denies, looks up at him, full of confusion as if mirroring his own.
“What are you on about, punk!?”
“Not talking to you, weird-smelling muscular man,” Kagome almost laughs at the identical names they thought of and almost frowns at his dislike of the scent if not for the risk of the current situation. “So, anything ya want to say? Better make it fast.”
“Anything...”
The thug, unamused by the short exchange tightens his grip on Kagome, but the held woman manages an “Are you… strong enough?” as if asking for an assurance, noticing how the two downed men are starting to stand up.
Her ‘angel’ smirks, fangs showing, “Is that what ya wanted to say?” he cracks his knuckles again.
“I’ve had enough! I didn’t promise we’ll bring you unharmed” roars Kagome’s captor as he positions his blade near her throat.
“SAY IT WENCH!”
“Please help me!”
The moment the three words leave Kagome’s mouth, she feels the hold on her loosen and eventually disappear as she falls on the ground together with the blade. A scream fills her ears, which makes her question if such agony really comes from the man that threatened her just moments ago.
“Damn it, you’re loud,” her savior comments as he knocks out her captor with his fists. As if that is not enough, he lifts the fainted man’s body and throws it to his two other companions who just stood in horror. Kagome is reminded of a catapult.
The next moments happen too fast for Kagome to process, as the three men who were all out in catching her and threatening her, start running for their lives – a complete switch of positions. She settles on the ground, her heartbeat unbearably beating as the situation sinks in.
“I’m safe…”
She stares below, chest and shoulders moving from a mix of tension leaving and fatigue being realized. Her hair is damp, her legs almost numb, and skin senses shivering from everything that just took place.
Clapping hands break her moment of relief, as she looks up to see the silver-haired man brush his hands to wag off dust. After gazing at the three men’s retreating figures, his golden eye peeks at her. She stares back, in-taking his unique features.
It is not like demons are new species for her as she always encounters in everyday scenarios and back at her job. Demons are part of the world and her world. But this demon’s looks are just incomparable to those that she has seen before.
The moon’s light complements the silver strands of his hair, illuminating well with his pair of golden eyes. His ears flick a bit as he faces her completely, which she notes as something so cute, fighting the urge to touch it (she is way too tired and drained to try and do so anyway. Besides it would be rude to do so).
His inner shirt has two buttons unclasped and is tucked out. Though she has seen it earlier, the fact that he is barefoot in such get-up kind of amuses her.
He narrows his eyes. “Can’t even say thanks?”
…What?
“Uhm…?”
“Ya suddenly deaf or something? I said, not even a thanks?”
Is this guy for real?
“After all that trouble, all you’re gonna do is stare at me like an idiot?”
…
“Hey…!” Kagome’s fatigue disappears in a blink of an eye as she manages to stand up abruptly to match him. “Excuse me, I am thankful for what you have done, but did you just really call me an idiot!?”
“Well, who the hell stares like that?!”
Kagome is unsure of what he meant by that, but she cannot help but bite back.
“I’ve been running all this time, lost and maybe for hours I don’t know! And I just had a blade near my throat! Can’t you just let everything settle a bit!? I was going to thank you for saving me and for all that trouble but you did not have to call me an idiot!” Where all the words came from in spite of her energy-draining race and heart-stopping captive a while ago, she has no idea. However, the lady is pretty sure that she is grateful for the big favor that this guy has done for her, but she will not back down from getting insulted like that.
“Woman, ya are probably a big idiot for getting three men to chase after you in this part of the city. Keh. I was sleeping and just heard some screeching, ya should be thankful that I came and meddled.”
Kagome is fuming, hands balling into a fist. Scratch branding him as an angel even if he did save her. He’s a demon! Literally and figuratively!
But right now, she has to let the anger slide down. What he did for her is a huge favor and she would have been in a despair hole right now if not for him.
“Listen here, Mr. Sensitive ears,” Mr. Sensitive ears’ eye twitches at the new brand as he glares at her and listens. What is up with this woman? He hates how her stormy gray eyes look at him and he does not even know why. It is irritating but something about her is far more… different. Why did he have to help such woman?
It is as if something in him kicked him (no matter how absurd that sounds) to just save her.
“First, my name is Kagome. Not wench, woman, and especially, not idiot,” if the woman did not seem surprised that she just revealed her name to a stranger, that means she mastered pretending.
“Two, thank you very much and I owe you one. I don’t have much right now but I promise to come back here and,” as soon as Kagome said it, the realization hits her. Where can she go right now? Going back would be too dangerous.
Noticing the change in her expression and lack of words for that matter, the dog demon opens his mouth to speak and interrupt her that she did not have to do anything and she should just leave but – “Inuyasha! Where are you?! It’s almost time to open!”
Shit, I forgot about that!
On cue, the ‘abandoned’ establishment’s lights turn on and Kagome is interrupted from her growing thoughts of panic. She looks at the building morphing with light.
Man called Inuyasha tenses up and stares at the club, his ears not missing the “Naraku, do not take down the illusion yet! I said ‘it’s almost time to open.’ I didn’t say we are open already.”
He scratches his head after hearing, “Oh. My bad?”
Kagome blinks. Once. Twice.
The walls suddenly look clean as white blankets and the blackened windows are now as clear and sparkly as diamonds. Gold-hued curtains are adorning the insides as seen from the glass. Right before her, a seemingly small-looking palace is suddenly in place.
What just happened?
The mahogany twin door opens, “There you are Inuyasha! I’ve been –” a brown-haired man starts saying but stops in the middle as his dark eyes fall on Kagome. If Kagome was not that awed with the sudden transformation of the building, she would have had more reactions when the man approached her and knelt before her. Instead, she just stared with mouth slightly agape.
“Would you bear my child?”
