My thoughts on Ms Marvel as a Pakistani

I just watched the first episode and its amazing so far.

Kamala's parents do not fit into the "savage brown parents oppressing their kids" trope and are VERY chill by Desi and Muslim standards.

Kamala's struggle doesnt seem like her faith is oppressing or holding her back, rather her own interests and responsibilities clash with her family, and her families perception of her.

I loved how they included parts of our culture and faith by having the characters speak Urdu casually, and mentioning Islamic things like Djinn, saying Bismillah, Aamir making Dua, the mom saying Astafghirallah and Haram, the characters wearing Shalwar Kameez, the paretns being obbsessed with cricket, the mom gossiping with an auntie while shopping in the Desi part of town, the inclusion of Pakistani music.

Thing is in other medias us Desi folk are just "Terrorist number 5" or some telemarket scammer named Rajkumar.

I had low expectations and worried that they may reduce parts of our culture for Western audiences. But the show still higlighted her heritage.

It was incredibally relatable to me and my sister as Pakistani diaspora, because Kamala's struggle with her own interests and her own culture and often those two cultures she is a part of clashing into one another and feeling like having to choose sides at times.

Some people complain about the parents having Indian actors, but I dont mind cuz almost all South Asians have shared ancestry, besides it would be unreasonable to get mad at a Scottish actor depicting an Irish character.

However there was some stuff I disliked.

Kamala's family are Muhajir in the comics and show (Descandants of Indians that migrated to Pakistan during the partition), but one scene in the show, has the dad say a Punjabi phraise (TBH parts of different Pakistani cultures tend to mix sometimes).

Nakia and Tyesha's hijabs are changed to a different style which sort of erases parts of these characters identities. I feel like they they where trying to make the Islamic parts more palatable to Western audiences which makes me worried how their gonna handle other things.

The power change kinda ruins a huge part of Kamala's character. Kamala was insecure, with image issues and had internalized colourism and racism. So the stretchy powers where meant as a sort of foil to all that. But having her powers be a generic purple green lantern knock off kinda ruins the whole thing.

Iman Vellani is a good actress and is perfect for the role of Ms Marvel, however she is more light skinned than in the comics, so there may have been some colourism when it came to casting.
