Jeb Bush: "Immigrants are more fertile."
Jeb Bush justifies his support for immigration reform by saying that immigrants are good for American society. He then adds further that they are good for American society because "immigrants are more fertile," which he uses to support his contention that immigrants provide myriad economic benefits to their communities.
Now, I really don't want to be nitpicky, especially since Jeb is taking a stance in opposition to his Republican counterparts, most of whom appear to hate immigrants so much that any immigrant - even those whose families have been here for generations - are seen as ushering the country into economic and moral depravity. Jeb's heart is in the right place. No matter what his justifications are, the end result is that he is supportive of immigration reform and giving undocumented immigrants status.
But - "immigrants are more fertile?" Really? What exactly does he mean by that? Is he saying that there is a biological basis for higher population growth within immigrant communities?
Hey, maybe what Jeb says is actually true! Readers, allow me to let you in on a huge secret that is well-known among immigrant communities. I'm an immigrant and did you know that all it takes to get me pregnant is a handshake? I'm not kidding. Whenever I shake the hand of a fellow immigrant, his sperm is magically excreted through his palm's sweat glands, which is then transferred into my palms and pushed all the way down to meet my, um, egg, to form a baby. Shake my hand twice, and nine months later, there will be twins. In extreme circumstances, some immigrant women reproduce like bacteria, with parts of their cells splitting to form different human beings!
On further consideration, perhaps the Bushes, too, have unique reproductive capabilities. After all, there are so many of them. At last count, there are - what? - six of them, each with their own sprawling families? Maybe Bushes, like immigrants, are also so fertile that one Bush is born every minute. There is a fertile Bush epidemic in the USA!
On a serious note, Jeb, your intentions were good, but maybe find other reasons for why immigration reform is needed? Maybe arguments that are reliant on racially-based biological determination aren't the best? Maybe look at the structural and cultural reasons for why there is more population growth among immigrant communities instead of saying that this is because immigrants are naturally more fertile?
How Small-Ranged Creatures Weathered the Storm
How does Earth's ever-changing climate affect the distribution of species? The answer depends, at least in part, on how stable the climate is in a particular region of the world -- and how migratory the animals who live there are. Brody Sandel and colleagues estimated something called the climate-change velocity, or the rate of climate displacement over the Earth's surface, during the peak of the last glacial period around 20,000 years ago.
