The safe house is quiet in the way places get after something has already gone wrong.

Jason moves through the space like he always does—efficient, contained, all sharp edges filed down to something functional. He checks the windows. Locks the door. Shrugs off his jacket and drapes it over the back of a chair with deliberate care, like order might settle his nerves if he’s precise enough about it.

You’re still here because he asked you to stay.

Not with words. Just a look, over his shoulder, tight and unreadable. You followed anyway.

He hasn’t said much since patrol. Just enough to explain the detour. Just enough to justify the silence. He doesn’t talk about the flashback directly, but you can see the aftermath of it in the way his shoulders stay tense, in how his gaze keeps drifting—not to you, but through you, like part of him is still somewhere else.

You don’t push. You never do.

Instead, you talk about small things. Neutral things. You keep your voice steady, grounded, the way you know helps. Jason listens with half his attention, nodding at the right moments, anchoring himself to the sound of you like it’s a line he can grab onto when the floor threatens to tilt again.

It works. Mostly.

He’s getting there—back into his body, back into the room—when it happens.

You’re mid-sentence, gesturing as you speak, when your hand comes down and squeezes his bicep. Not hard. Not suggestive. Just a grounding touch, automatic and familiar, like you’ve done a hundred times before when he needed reminding that he’s here. That he’s safe.

The second your fingers close, Jason stills.

Not like he’s startled.

Like something inside him has gone very, very quiet.

Your hand lingers for half a beat too long before you realize what you’ve done. The awareness hits you at the same moment his breath catches—a mutual recognition, sharp and undeniable.

Oh.

You pull your hand back instinctively, apology already forming, but Jason moves first.

His hand comes up—slow, deliberate—and settles at your waist.

Not pulling you closer. Not pushing you away.

Just there.

The contact is firm, grounding, his grip steady enough to anchor you even as it betrays him. You feel the tension in his fingers, the restraint threaded through every inch of it. His thumb presses lightly into your side, like he’s checking that you’re real. Like he needs the confirmation.

The room feels smaller. Warmer. The air between you tightens, charged with everything neither of you meant to surface tonight.

Jason looks at you then—really looks—and you see it flicker across his face. The realization. The line he didn’t know he was standing this close to until now.

This isn’t the aftermath of the flashback.

This is something else entirely.

You can tell he’s fighting himself. Not the past. Not the ghosts that followed him home from patrol.

This.

You.

“If I—” He stops, jaw tightening. Starts again. “If I cross this…”

He trails off, breath shallow, hand still at your waist like it’s the only thing keeping him upright.

You don’t move. Don’t give him an out he didn’t ask for. You meet his gaze, steady and open, even though your pulse is loud enough you’re sure he can feel it beneath his palm.

Jason exhales, slow and controlled, like he’s forcing his body to stand down.

“I don’t touch things I’m not ready to risk breaking.”

His thumb flexes once before he lets go.

The absence of his hand is louder than the silence that follows. You feel it immediately—the space where he was, the warmth fading, the restraint settling back into place like a lock clicking shut.

Jason steps back, just enough to put air between you again. He doesn’t leave. Doesn’t turn away. He just stands there, eyes dark and searching, like he’s committing the moment to memory even as he refuses to act on it.

“I’m not walking away,” he says quietly. “I just… can’t do this wrong.”

You nod. Not because it doesn’t hurt—but because you understand.

The line is there now. Clear. Named.

He didn’t cross it.

But neither of you pretend it isn’t there.

The safe house settles back into stillness around you, unresolved but steady, holding the space between what almost happened and what will—eventually—demand to be faced.

Not tonight.

Tonight, restraint is its own kind of care.

And it’s enough.
