Doodle drawing of Milo while rewatching Atlantis
Whenever I try to envision Ryland Grace, I always come up with Milo James Thatch from Atlantis: The Lost Empire.
Watching the movie adaptation of Project Hail Mary hasn't changed this- it just means I imagine Milo with Ryan Gosling's voice.
And actually, considering Milo's character in the Atlantis movies (there's two, though the second's fairly obscure), he actually does have a bit in common with Grace.
Maybe....an Atlantis AU of PHM?

+ a shit ton of gifs I made
I'm so tired of this fandom reducing Milo to still being someone who's weak and helpless (even after the film where he shows he's capable of being a powerful, strong, respected leader), basically being Kida's exotic pet. Not only does this view completely miss the point of Milo's character, I think it actually takes away from Kida's character too by making it seem as though she views him as being inferior, and that just doesn't fit her to me. She sees him as an equal, a valuable partner, and I think she would find it insulting/hurtful if someone suggested he was inferior in some way.
This is coming from someone (me) who doesn't even ship this pair, btw.
Random Scholmander HC: Special Interest
Most people think Rourke is a huge nerd about army/military stuff, probably because he was in the army. While he does know a lot about that stuff, it's not his true special interest, a fact Milo is glad for because he doesn't really care much for that sort of thing.
Rourke's ACTUAL special interest? Stars. Planets. Spacecraft/space travel. Get him talking about this kind of stuff, and he's suddenly doing an Oscar-worthy Milo imitation. He is the ONLY person to successfully get Milo to sit and listen to someone talk about this stuff. He is the reason Milo knows what "Doppler beaming" or "photon sphere" or "particle jets" means. He can tell you the difference between a Standard Reg and Kuiper Lateral warp drive (and he could install/repair them too.
In some AUs, Rourke even has his own personal craft that he kept after he and the others used it to escape from (basically) space pirates. He then did all kinds of mods on it, and Milo helped just so he could watch Rourke nerd out over it. Milo was actually sad that he wasn't there when Rourke discovered the key to interdimensional travel (Milo did get to watch him receive the patent for the interdimensional drive starship engine, which was then renamed a 'Rourke drive' after him).
Milo still isn't the biggest space guy, but he's more into it than he was. Any excuse to watch Lyle light up and nerd out.
i'm so bored so i made a hold me back cake
look they make a little heart 💚
Who should be Milo in a live-action Atlantis the Lost Empire?
Tom Holland
Tye Sheridan (Wade Watts/Parzival from Ready Player One)
Someone else fresh and young
