Run with me here... what if Milton Dyer was Gene's dad? It was my first thought upon seeing a young Milton Dyer, especially when he was still assumed to be Unagami. It kind of makes more sense if that were the case, but... I'm still attached to it.

The first rule of the Ninjago timeline is be yourself and have fun anyway... it's not impossible that he fathered a son before disappearing from the public eye. Maybe as he became more of a recluse, he shipped Gene off to boarding school- he's not a very present father for either of his sons.

I could see him supporting Gene's evil genius scheming in some capacity because he wanted to do better than his parents did when he wanted to pursue video games.

Gene graduating from boarding school to learn that he has an older(?) brother that's actually a video game AI and that's part of why his dad wasn't very present throughout his life could be fun.

I gave the opening argument for the People of Ninjago City vs. Milton Dyer five or so years ago. I have the notes from that day, but it's something I did my first year of undergrad on the day it was due so it's not the best legal analysis. In the future, I would like to better define these legal arguments, but for now they are making me analyze real-life issues. For now, here's my notes:

Good evening. My name is [Redacted]. I am the prosecutor in this case and I am proud to represent the people of Ninjago City. At this trial, we will be seeking a guilty verdict for the defendant Milton Dyer, on counts of gross negligence and obstruction of justice. 30 years ago, the defendant, Milton Dyer, created the game, Prime Empire or, as it was called during the early stages, Unagami, an abbreviation for Unfinished Adventure Game.

[Facts]

Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, this case revolves around the disruption of the sacred balance between humanity and technology as a result of one man’s cowardice.

In investigation of crime, Jay Walker returned motherboard to original machine

Surge of energy uploads Prime Empire onto every arcade machine

In just 24 hours, Jay Walker and over 800 Ninjago citizens were taken into the game

Conditions within game, many traumatized, lost 3 lives, made into energy cubes

Outside the game, Unagami, released every criminal in prison, including The Mechanic

Arcades shut down, damage to gaming and restaurant industries

Kidnapping and torture of the Ice Ninja, Zane, and the respected individual, Wu, through Mechanic

Creation of the Manifestation Gate, dangerous energy surge

Release of dangerous beings, extensive damage to the city of Ninjago

Ultimately negotiated with Unagami to stop the terror

Fortunately no deaths but there was a large degree of injury and damage across city

Defense

May claim reclusive life makes it impossible to have known of danger and ability of robots however there have been several total dominations of ninjago that make it impossible for anyone within the land/city to fail to notice technological possibilities due to prominent figures such as the technological overlord, Mr. E, and Zane

May claim that the storage and security was enough to stop the game from being found however on the night the motherboard was found it was under no security

May claim that artificial intelligence cannot be fully sentient 

May claim that he was not negligent as he was a key part of stopping Unagami’s terror however this was long after a majority of the damage had already been done.

Sometimes I remember all over again that ninjago went there

We had a game developer who created and subsequently neglected one of the first ai in existence deny the possibility of artificial sentience not only to his creation, but the woman who saved his life several times. He told her, to her face, that it’s “incredible how realistic your reactions are” when her boyfriend was being tortured. She of course put him in her place, stating that “any sufficiently advanced programming is no more or less real than you are,” promptly shutting down any and all bigotry from this man and neither doubting herself nor putting him down.

We had one of our main protagonists struggle with possessive tendencies in his relationships. He was jealous and manipulative and his flaws were focused on and given the light of day without antagonizing him. He was forced to work through them and realize that he was in the wrong and mend that relationship. An entire season was dedicated to this man facing the consequences of his actions and he did so with strength and humility and came out a better person for it. Not everyone in the community agrees it was handled well but it was handled. A kids’ show discussed toxic relationships and the importance of boundaries and the necessity of rebuilding trust with those you want to continue to be in your life.

We had one of our main characters having an extremely complex relationship with his parents — especially his father — that had a foundation of love but got warped beyond recognition. The situation became unhealthy to everyone involved and both sides recognized that. The dad showed remorse and wanted to make up for his actions and he wasn’t forgiven. He tried to learn how to be a good dad again and his son said no and he respected that. He was there for his son when he needed him and when he no longer wanted him around he left. He wasn’t a kid anymore and having his dad around caused more hurt than healing. His father may not have wanted to hurt him but he did. He didn’t forgive his father and that’s okay, he doesn’t owe his father anything, much less a place in his life.
