Music Review: WebsterX, Desperate Youth

In his mixtape, Desperate Youth, Webster X intends to represent his generation on a path from pain to enlightenment. He writes that the tape "is a full expression in sixteen songs to encourage us as youth to pursue whatever the hell we want to do instead of falling subdue to the swirling pressures of today."

The Milwaukee native is only consistent in the fact that his rap is experimental- every song has a new twist and a different beat, keeping us on our towns. In Blue Dream (Trippy Trebby) Webster X starts out with a low, raspy voice and a flow reminiscent of Earl Sweatshirt.

By the time we get to Ol' Betsy, Webster's voice has transformed, rapping over a beat closer identified to trap about getting fucked up in his car and running from the cops. My personal favorite is Tuesday (produced by UK's GymLeaderMatt), about the rapper's hazy lazy weekdaze. The simple, classic beat with jazz undertones makes this a song you can listen to in the morning or on a late night drive as Webster X talks about all of his days blending together.

Sometimes, I felt the message of partying and ridin' around in cars got a little repetitive, but altogether the mix tape brings the intended message to light. In I Grew Up on Hip Hop, the rapper spits over a Lana Del Rey remix: I grew up on Hip Hop/go ahead and reap the knowledge/Now go get that knowledge/and get up out of that college. Throughout Desperate Youth Webster X encourages a pursuit that is messy but organic, to live a life where knowledge is found in experience rather than an old textbook.
