I was on the lookout for single-reed instruments and #clarinet variants at #mimphx, but compared to the plethora of oddball brass instruments there weren't that many clarinet-type instruments (single reed, cylindrical bore). But here's one! An oktavin, c. 1910. No idea. I can't find anything about it on Wikipedia or anyone playing it on YouTube, which makes it pretty obscure. Looks like it also probably has a conical bore, so would have a more saxophone-y sound. (at Musical Instrument Museum - MIM)

The Taylor Swift display in the Artists section at #mimphx. MIM is totally awesome, don't get me wrong. But oh dear, their exhibit on recent performing musicians, primarily popular music, is very, very white. None of the African-American artists without whom American popular music simply would not exist are there. Motown is not represented at all. Taylor Swift, but no Beyoncé. With the recent death of Chuck Berry (not present) it's especially noticeable. The artists may have been selected for availability of artifacts rather than an attempt to be representative, but for as truly great as the rest of the museum is, this is not awesome.
