Making an unannounced stop at the Lockwood-Rolland house, she had clearly walked in on a moment that was supposed to be forever private. “You okay?” She asked softly.

“I wasn’t crying.”

“A common expression of the not crying,” she retorted, “it’s not exactly been a vacation since you got back. You’ve been through the meat-grinder that someone mistook for the wringer. Things are starting to stabilize again, and Sawyer will work her non-supernatural magic on Sam to pry that grudge from his hands. He can’t hate you forever.” Before he argued, she repeated with more emphasis, “he can’t. Best friends fight, but they also forgive each other. 

“Being an untriggered teen is a bitch, all rage and bodily changes and other first-time intense feelings all in one. You are both hardwired to protect Sawyer for different reasons, and you put his instinct under house arrest. You should have because he wouldn’t have been very productive with a broken limb, but you also told his mom in order to do it. Right or not, that’s a dick move.

“Will’s logical brain is fighting Sam’s emotional heart. That’s going to keep you two in circles. You need to hear him, and you need to fight your double dose of argumentativeness and take it. He’s hurt because your actions said I don’t trust you. I know that’s not what you meant, and logically, you were right, he didn’t need to be out there. It’s why Ronnie and Eric agreed with you. But he doesn’t want or need logical right now; he wants and needs his best friend to understand again. It won’t likely resolve overnight, but you need to make the effort to show that you do.”

The closer it got to March, the more reality began to settle in. The Davidson’s were leaving soon to claim their territory in McKinley. It wasn’t very far, but maybe Jared had just gotten used to have the pack around town. They were good people, they took care of his brother and adopted sister before they were ever even pack. He’d bonded with them through training and video games and he was going to miss that every day.

And then there were the Rolland’s. The Vagus were also leaving, and while the Rolland’s would be sticking around a bit longer, they too would be gone soon enough. Even if him and Quinn had gotten off on a wrong foot, he was going to miss running the fight school with Vic. These last few months had been such a joy, even amongst all the chaos, because he was getting to help people. 

And maybe he also got a kick out of being considered a ‘boss fight’ to all the students.

Finding Vic standing on Alice’s back porch overlooking today’s lessons, he could tell she was in the same sentimental mood; knowing this would all soon come to an end. “So, you’re all really leaving soon, huh?” He comments as he comes up beside her. Jared already knew the answer to that. There were no more immediate threats with Aurora gone, so it only made sense things would start to normalize. Once the peace deal was in place, the Rolland’s had a duty to fulfill, and on top of that, things were still complicated between the families. 

“There’s some things you just can’t change.” Vic retorts with a hint of sadness.

“Yeah. It’s a shame though, we have a really good system going here, ya know?” Maybe it wasn’t in the cards right now, but Jared was always hopeful for the future. There was peace somewhere down the line for them all. Turning to her, he adds, “look, I know you’ve got your priorities and obligations and such, but we really do have something here. Adrian really found his calling with this, and the others really enjoy it too. If you ever find the time, I think we could really build something extraordinary with this school.”

That’d be a ways down the line, he knew, but the next generation wasn’t terribly far off for most of them. Most of them were coupled and settling down, it was only a matter of time, and eventually those kids, especially the wolves, would need to learn the essentials. It wasn’t just fighting, it was learning control and how to cope if someone did trigger their gene.

“You should think about it, Vic. This is your baby, and it made a difference. And if you decide to go big with it, I’m more than happy to lend a hand in building it.”

“The day I stop believing that people are capable of better is the day I’ll cease to see a point in doing what I do. There will be no good fight left. Of course, I believe they can be, I’ve never given that up...and I won’t.”

Deep in the works tonight, Kol just barely caught wind of Elijah as he entered the study. He had far too much on his plate right now to deal with whatever his brother had come in here to lecture him about. There was an entire coven dedicated to the eradication of supernaturals, a particularly vengeful vampire with an army backing him, a traitor among the Vagus, and not to the mention the ever looming threat of Mikael. All of which required his immediate attention seeing as they were a threat to him and to Ani especially.

“I’ve no time for your nonsense tonight, Elijah,” he dismisses with a wave before he can so much as get a word. “I’ve got angry vampires and witches foaming at the mouth to destroy me. Ani is being targeted and isn’t safe. The big brother, little brother lecture will have to wait.”

Continuing to flip through his book, the room grows silent, though his brother remains. After a few moments, he peaks up from his studies and notes the look upon Elijah’s face. Apparently he found something amusing. 

And then, he made a comment...

“There is no ‘love’ between Anikaia and I,” he growls in annoyance, perhaps a tad defensive. Why wasn’t he born an only child? “She is a powerful ally, a loyal partner in crime, and a great lay at best. Beyond that, there is nothing! And I’d appreciate it if you and Rebekah would stop projecting your ridiculous romantic ideals for me.”

“What do you call this whole deal with Quinn?” Elijah retorts, looking rather smug as he appears unconvinced by Kol’s argument. 

“Convenience. Quinn has knowledge into this siren-hating coven and whoever this bloody traitor is,” he argues as he sets aside the book he’d been reading. “He’s worth more alive than dead right now. Or his sister in this case, since that appears to be his biggest motivator. Our uneasy alliance hardly means fireworks and wedding bells for Anikaia and I.”

As they sat there in silence for a good few minutes, Bonnie could tell that something was eating away at him. She wasn’t sure what the problem was, but she took the initiative and tried to assure him that she was here to help no matter what. Friends through thick and thin and all that.

Listening as Quinn explained the deal, she was all too familiar with that sort of inner moral crisis. Either dance with the devil or let someone you love die a horrible death. Even when the choice was obvious though, it was never particularly easy to make.

“She’s your sister, Quinn. Sometimes we do what we have to in order to protect the ones we love and it isn’t always easy. Trust me, I understand probably better than anyone. I’ve been in your shoes many times before,” she tells him with a sigh. How many people might still be alive if she hadn’t caved to Klaus to save Jeremy’s life when he needed her to un-do Esther’s linking spell? Sometimes those choices still haunted her, but Bonnie knew she’d change nothing. When someone you love is in trouble, it’s barely even a choice.

“I’m not saying that you’re in the right or wrong here, because in your shoes, I’d have done the same for Gray. It just makes you human.”

Evelyn “Evie” Caldwell

Born into the Gemini Coven in Portland, Oregon, Evie is the older sister of Claire. She was only eight years old when her cousin Kai Parker went on a murder spree killing four of her cousins, including Joey with whom she was very close. This left her devastated and afraid for the longest time after. Shortly after Kai was banished to the prison world, her parents departed from the coven with her and Claire in favor of a normal, magic-free life.

Evie would later grow up to be the more responsible of the Caldwell sisters. While Claire rebelled against their parent’s wishes to pursue magic, all but abandoning her career in design, she was more understanding and in-line with their views. As a result, she helps her parents manage an art gallery in New York City.

Despite their differences though, Evie cares a lot about her baby sister and worries about her constantly. When she first got mixed up with Kol Mikaelson, she tried and failed to convince her many times that nothing good could come of working with an Original. Going so far as to follow her to New Orleans, where Kol resided and taught her the ways of magic.

Unfortunately, that was exactly what happened and nature not only turned on Claire, but she had gained some enemies in the process. One night her sister was attacked leaving their gallery and their mother, Andrea had to step in to save her; conjuring up magic she had long since buried. This was when Evie decided it was time for her to push her personal feelings aside and learn how to use her powers for her safety and for Claire’s. 

With Claire now living in Mystic Falls under the protection of Henrik, Evie feels a little more at ease, but still worries about her sister’s well being. Having heard some of the horror stories, she doesn’t trust the Originals or any vampires much despite the faith her sister tries to instill in her. Especially after Kol had selfishly abandoned her and left her to deal with the aftermath of the resurrection spell alone.

“Do everything Astrid, my mom, Aunt Alice, and I tell you to do. Be yourself, but don’t be yourself. The best version of you, so forget for a while that you’re a flawed human being. But do it. If either of them or both of them wanted to do it, I would say they should. It’s a lot of fun, even if it does get a little catty. It’s competition. Maybe by the time they’re ready in a couple years, I’ll be one of the judges. Who knows.”
