Of Gods and Mortals is a Minecraft au focused on the og trio (Steve, Alex and Herobrine) plus my ocs, Isaac being the major one, and revolves around their lives, how events that took place in the Aether effected all of them and how their stories interwine with angst, emotional turmoil and all the nice torture I inflict upon my blorbos.
The premises of the au is that the various Minecraft dimensions exist (Overworld, Nether, End and Aether] but to exist and thrive there is a need for balance between those dimensions, such as no ender dragon in the Overworld or no big catastrophies cause by people or gods that could put all dimensions at risk [ex: many mobs exist because humans tried to colonise other dimensions, which gave the Overworld major influence on the other dimensions and by proxy, cause the loss of balanced that least to developed of mobs and later on the basically mass extinction of dragons in the end. To try and regain balance the universe spawned an immortal being, Notch)
The timeline starts around a millennium before Steve is born. The main events in chronological order are:
•Notch wanders the Overworld trying to understand what happened to it and to humans
•he meets Herobrine, that at that point in time is just a skilled miner, and the two become close friends
•not long after, Notch grants Herobrine with immortality and they decide to explore and later rebuild the Aether
•as the Aether starts to look more like a habitable place and less like a bunch of ruins, the explore more of the Overworld. During on of Brine adventure he meets a man named Jeb and they quickly become friends
•as they grow close, Jeb becomes like a family member to them, but he's also growing old and eventually Notch decided to make him immortal and invites him to live in the Aether with them.
• as humans starts to live in more villages and more kids are born, the trio catches voices of a kid born upside down, Dinnerbone. Although Notch tries and fails to figure out how that happened, they decide to basically adopt him as he wasn't wecomed by his village nor his bio family
• as the gods met and granted immortality to other humans, the Aether grew populated and the Notch, Herobrine, Jeb and Dinnerbone are now officially the Aether rulers.
• a few centuries pass by and no matter how much Notch tries to be the "god of the people", Herobrine is preferred in both the aether and Overworld, especially in the latter as humans have a bigger affinity with him as he was once mortal. With the passage of time, Notch starts to grow envious
• since they relate so much to him because he still resembles a human, what best way to fix this that to give him powers? Notch starts to manipulate Brine into accepting them
• he eventually agrees but things don't go as planned. Thanks to a glitch in Herobrine's code, his powers remains unstable, especially under emotional or physical distress. Notch tries to test the limit of his brother's power but that leaves the latter traumatised in the long run, with the trust he once held for Notch crumbling away.
• the relationship between the two only worsened with time, so much so that even Jeb and Dinnerbone had started to grow concerned but they decide to not interfere, thinking that it would eventually solve itself
• it didn't solve itselft and had only worsened until the two almost completely stopped talking to one another, let alone going outside the castle's walls. At tgat point everyone noticed something was wrong, some speculated, a few brave ones tried to get an explanation but the majority thought of the topic as taboo
• one evening, an argument between the two brothers escalates and Herobrine looses controls of his powers, attacking the other. Jeb and Dinnerbone, hearing the commotion went checking and seeing then fight, they try to separate them, getting hurt in the process. Meanwhile Notch lies about the events and Herobrine gets imprisoned. With the other believing Hero had turned evil and hungry for power to the point of betraying and hurting his own brother, they all organise a trial in which Herobrine would be judged and his fate decided. The latter came back to his senses as the trial started, all Aether was there to see, except children. Herobrine tried to explaining what happened, how Notch had lied, but at that point his fate was alredy sealed and every second of the trial blurred in a public humiliation.
• Herobrine gets sentenced to a banishment in the Nether. He gets carried there by Dinnerbone as he tried in vain again to explain what had happened, crying and begging the once child to listen to him. After crossing the portal and getting a glimpse of what the Nether looked like, Dinnerbone leaves the man he had once viewed as an older brother behind.
• Although everyone tried to go back to their previous roles, nothing could have stayed unchanged and Herobrine absence was louder than ever. Jeb buried himself in work and Dinnerbone started following each and every order given by Notch, unconsciously developing a phobia of the same pattern repeating with him as he too, like Herobrine, had a glitch [yk, being upside down and all]
• a few centuries pass and eventually Herobrine figures out how to escape to both the Aether and Overworld, wreaking havoc in the pursuit of revenge.
• eventually the anger dissipates enough that not even spilling blood in the Aether made Herobrine feel a sense of purpose. In the end, what once were great wars and fights between good and evil, narrated in tales old books, became a cat and mouse chase that had greatly lost the fervour of the first times
Ok, end of pt.1 because it came out longer then I thought, I'll make a pt.2 soon, following Stev, Alex and my ocs
So, a few days ago, I saw an edit about wolves and I realised that they really remind me of Herobrine [and it's also the national animal of my country]
It got me thinking, if I were to associate an animal to the various gods, what would they be??
Starting with Herobrine, as mentioned before, it would be wolves as they are loyal to their mate and have a strong sense of family while also being able to remain very individualistic. They can also be symbols of freedom, nature's spirit, resourcefulness and adaptability under dire circumstances.
I believe this pretty much resumes Hero's essence, but it's not the only animal I associate with him.
Another pick, that is meant to see as coexisting with the wolf one, is the canary, canary in a coal mine to be precise!
If you didn't know, historically, a canary would be put in a small cage when going in a mine to detect co2 and other toxic gasses. When the canary died [long before the miners], they would resurface and be safe [don't quite the explanation please, it's really bare bone]. I think this scenario really fits Brine as he was the first one to be hurt by Notch. He is the canary that died, the one affected by Notch selfishness and ego before anyone else.
Moving on, Dinnerbone would be a dog. Sweet, loyal, faithful, and at times, naively so toward Notch. He never questioned him, simply following whatever order he gave in exchange for validation and as a distraction toward his interior turmoil.
He also reminds me of a fawn as they symbolise innocence and purity of youth. After all, he's the youngest of the four and as much as he might be immortal, so quite old, I think he still kept that innocence and naive side of himself, just for a few things. But that side would be buried and hidden away let's be real.
Notch would be a vulture as they are often associated with death, decay, doom and also purification, rebirth and renewal. Their dual nature really captures Notch. The rebirth, renewal and purification recalling how he came to be to rebalanced the various dimensions after humanity was almost wiped out by zombie, but to also symbolise the way he is viewed by his followers and the inhabitants of the Aether. On the other hand, death, decay and doom show his darker side. The part of him that is very well capable of dirtying his hands in blood out of pure selfishness, just like he did to Herobrine after all.
Another animal I associate with him are bears as they're associate with strength and wisdom.
Lastly Jeb! I reminds me of reindeers and deers. I've read reindeers are associated with perseverance, endurance and strength which I think fits his personality.
Unfortunately I don't have much to say about him, he gives me "old soul" type vibe but I struggle to associate him with animals. Perhaps moths as they are belived to be the soul of the dead in my local folklore.
