American No Places: All Island Taxi, Long Island.Behind the Mineola train station where I wait for my train back to sunny Brooklyn.Better than the Colosseum or the Spanish Steps.America is mostly a collection of entirely disposable non-places, places that don't really exist and that are really nowhere (and no time) at all. That's the main reason why I moved there decades ago. So that I can be a permanent tourist of no places.Photo by ME.

The Dillinger Escape Plan December 29, 1998 Deja One Mineola, NY
Reading this reminded me: A week or so ago I was driving through Mineola, Texas, and I stopped at the local Goodwill. I had some time to kill and thought maybe I’d find something worthwhile. As usual, their records were garbage, unless you were looking for Jimmy Swaggart or Jane Fonda workout albums or whatever, but they did have a CD copy of Tom Petty’s Wildflowers, which is gorgeous, and the best Tom Petty album, and one of the best summertime albums I can think of, and the perfect thing for the long drive I was on.
Unfortunately, when I opened up the jewel case and flipped the CD over, it was scuffed all to hell, and I put it back. I was disappointed that I didn’t get to buy the album, but I was also glad to see that it had obviously been played to death, a quarter-century of good times scratched into the plastic.
