Further proof that psychology has taken over my life: I did a statistical analysis of my psychopathology professor's "um" usage in class tonight
Over a five-minute period I recorded the number of um's per minute. x = 17, 18, 9, 11, 6. M = 12.2, s = 5.167 (Deviation scores were 4.8, 5.8, -3.2, -1.2, -6.2. Squared deviations were 23.04, 33.64, 10.24, 1.44, 38.44. Sum of squares was 106.8. Variance was 26.7)
This woman said um 12.2 times per minute, which comes out to 732 times per hour (if her rate stays constant). Potential limits to my "study" (lolz) include a very small sample size and confounding variables such as length of the slide she was reading, complexity of the idea(s) she was explaining and whether or not someone had a question during the time I was observing her use of um.
I think I'll go to bed now.
